Bombers outlast Cadets in home opener

HUXLEY - The Ballard volleyball team celebrated its first home match of the season with an exciting five-set victory over Iowa Falls-Alden Aug. 25 in Huxley.

The Bombers jumped out to a two-set lead, but saw the Cadets recover to force a rally game.

Ballard took the first set by a 25-21 score, then won a 25-23 thriller. Iowa Falls-Alden came back with a 25-22 win in the third set and the Cadets claimed a 25-22 triumph in the fourth.

In the rally game, Ballard adjusted to reclaim the momentum in the nick of time. The Bombers pulled off a 15-8 victory to pull to 1-1 on the season.

For the match Ballard totaled 54 kills against 31 errors in 204 attacks. The Bombers picked up 14 aces serving and they also had eight blocks.

Abby Carlin and Olivia Vier were the big hitters for Ballard in the match.

Carlin had 25 kills against just nine errors and she added 23 digs, two blocks and three aces on a 20 of 20 serving performance. Vier compiled 24 kills and she also recorded 27 digs, three blocks and three aces.

Juliana Vier chipped in five kills at the net and added two aces for Ballard.

Cassidy Shepley and Jenna Moody also came up big for the Bombers.

Shepley had 49 assists at setter and she picked up 25 digs and two blocks and went 17 of 19 serving with three aces.

Moody was huge in the back row with 30 digs. She also had one assist and went 20 of 21 serving with two aces.

Karlee Ahrenholtz added seven digs and one ace; Cassie Smith came up with three digs, one assist and one block and Madison Knutson totaled three digs and one assist for the Bombers.

Ashley Bricknese had 27 digs and five aces, Lauren Keane recorded 24 assists and 14 digs and Jackie Timm picked up 10 kills for Iowa Falls-Alden.

PELLA - Ballard wasn’t able to keep pace with No. 2 Pella (Class 4A) to start the season Aug. 23 as the Bombers were swept in three sets by the Little Dutch.

Ballard was overwhelmed by scores of 25-11 and 25-10 in the first two sets. The Bombers put up a much better fight in the third set, but still came up short by a 25-18 score.

The Bombers had 15 kills and 17 errors in 77 attacks during the loss. They went 23 of 27 serving with just one ace and totaled seven blocks.

Abby Carlin had seven kills and digs apiece and Olivia Vier recorded seven kills, six digs and three blocks for Ballard. Juliana Vier chipped in four blocks and one kill.

Cassidy Shepley came up with 15 assists and nine digs for the Bombers. Jenna Moody contributed 15 digs and one ace.

Madison Knutson tacked on three digs and Cassie Smith had one for Ballard.

Emily Holterhaus paced Pella with 11 kills and four blocks. Kiki Pingel registered 22 assists, 10 digs and three blocks for the Little Dutch.
