BAXTER - A potent rushing attack lifted the Collins-Maxwell-Baxter football team to a 27-21 victory over East Marshall on homecoming night in Baxter.

The Raiders piled up 339 yards rushing on the night. That overcame a productive Mustang passing game to give CMB its second win in a row as the Raiders improved to 2-3 overall and 2-1 in Class 2A District 3.

CMB prevailed despite not having head coach Rob Luther on the sidelines. Luther had to sit out the game after being ejected in last week’s win over West Marshall.

“It was tough for me not being able to be at the game due to the ejection from the week prior,” Luther said. “It was good to string two wins together. I thought our kids played hard, but we still made way too many mistakes. We had 12 penalties. Some were at crucial times. This has to get fixed and in a hurry.”

CMB held a 21-7 lead midway through the third quarter. Blake Coughenour had touchdown runs from three and 46 yards out in the first half and he added a 12-yard scoring scamper with eight minutes, 39 seconds left in the third quarter.

East Marshall pulled within 21-13 on a 1-yard Noah Bandstra touchdown run with four minutes, 22 seconds left in the third quarter.

CMB answered early in the fourth quarter on a 9-yard touchdown pass from Braydon Aker to Tucker Maxwell. But the Raiders missed a 2-point conversion pass to keep their lead at 27-13 following the touchdown.

East Marshall got right back in the game in the final five minutes of the fourth quarter. Zane Johnson caught a 4-yard touchdown pass from Taylor DeBondt to get the Mustangs within 27-21 with 4:44 to go.

CMB didn’t allow the Mustangs to do any further damage, holding on for the victory.

Coughenour was outstanding for CMB in the win. He ran for 209 yards and three touchdowns on 34 carries.

“We ran the ball extremely well Friday,” Luther said. “Our o-line did a great job getting to the second level and creating great seams for Coke.”

CMB ended up with 408 yards of total offense to 288 for East Marshall. East Marshall did hurt the Raiders through the air as DeBondt completed 22 of 35 passes for 267 yards and two touchdowns with no interceptions.

“We scored every time we had the ball but one,” Luther said. “We just need to get off the field on defense, and even more specifically, third and fourth down. Right now we are not coming up with the big defensive stop. We are seeing moments that make me feel we can be a very good team. It just comes down to consistency.”

Aker ran for 73 yards and he also completed 2 of 3 passes for 22 yards. Hunter McWhirter completed 6 of 8 passes for 47 yards and added 28 yards on the ground for CMB.

Brady Kemp was CMB’s top receiver with five catches for 42 yards. Travis Lindemoen added two grabs for 18 yards and Dalton Birchmier chipped in 26 yards rushing for the Raiders.

On defense, CMB did do a good job pressuring Debondt. Archer McFadden and Jason Hillgren came up with two sacks apiece and Will Clapper added one sack.

Zachary Schaffer recovered a fumble for CMB to account for the game’s only turnover.

Logan Nicholson caught eight passes for 107 yards, Johnson made six grabs for 63 yards and Cole Nauman added three receptions for 52 yards for East Marshall. Noah Bandstra made 14 tackles on defense for the Mustangs, who fell to 1-4 overall and 0-3 in the district.

Up next for CMB is a road game at Saydel (3-2, 1-2). The game will take place on homecoming week at Saydel this Friday and it begins at 7 p.m.
