Bombers fall to Carroll in defensive struggle

CARROLL — For the second year in a row the Ballard football team suffered a heartbreaking loss in a defensive battle with Carroll.

Ballard was dealt a 17-14 setback Friday. Carroll won in similar fashion last year in Huxley, prevailing by a 9-7 score.

On Friday the score was knotted at 7-7 going into halftime. Carroll took a 17-7 lead in the third quarter when Chris Lee hit a 31-yard field goal and Jack Troutman recovered a fumble in the end zone.

Connor Drew hooked up with Nic Edwards on an 8-yard touchdown pass later in the third to get Ballard back in the game. But the Bombers were unable to put any more points on the board the rest of the way in falling to 1-1.

“Carroll is a really good, physical team,” Ballard co-head coach Kyle Howard said. “We’re really proud of how our kids fought.”

The Bombers were hurt by three turnovers. They were also held to 30 yards rushing.

Another strong defensive effort and the pass-catch tandem of Drew and Edwards kept Ballard in the game.

Carroll was limited to 239 yards. Drew completed 12 of 22 passes for 235 yards and ran and threw for one touchdown apiece and Edwards made six grabs for an impressive 198 yards and a score.

Blaine Hermann rushed for 63 yards, Bryce Haessig made two catches for 19 yards and Nolan Schonhorst added an 11-yard reception for Ballard. Sam Salasek made 8.5 tackles, Sam Petersen tallied eight, Nick Wacha seven, Rylee Davidson 6.5 and Riley Neel six for the Bombers on defense.

Colby Vincent threw for 123 yards and one touchdown, Tory Feldman had four catches for 83 yards and one score, Jake Roiland ran for 40 yards and Jack Troutman recovered a fumble for a touchdown for the Tigers, who fell to 1-1.

Ballard goes back on the road to take on Dallas Center-Grimes (1-1) this Friday. The game will take place at 7:30 p.m. in Grimes.
