Here are the 10 top Ames-area high school sports performers for July 11-17
Ballard is headed to the state softball tournament and the Ames softball and Gilbert and Ballard baseball teams saw their seasons come to a close last week.
Ballard advanced to state with an impressive 8-1 victory over fourth-ranked West Liberty in the Class 3A regional final at West Liberty July 12. The Bombers take a 16-20 record into Fort Dodge Tuesday against defending 3A champion Davenport Assumption.
Ames gave a valiant effort against No. 1 Fort Dodge in the 5A regional softball finals July 12. The Little Cyclones fell to the defending state champions in a close 3-1 battle to finish 22-19.
The Gilbert baseball team dropped a tight 6-4 affair with Webster City in the 3A substate semifinals July 11 at Webster City to finish 14-12. Ballard ended its baseball season at 19-11 after falling to ninth-ranked Independence in the 3A substate semifinals in a 3-2 battle at Independence.

Baumgardner fired a one-hitter to help the Ballard softball team upset No. 4 West Liberty, 8-1, in the Class 3A regional finals July 12 at West Liberty.
Baumgardner struck out six batters. She was also 3-for-4 at the plate with a double, triple and three RBIs to help Ballard punch its ticket to state for the first time since 2017.
Husak was 2-for-3 with a walk during Ballard's victory over West Liberty. Husak scored three runs to help the Bombers advance to state.
The sophomore second baseman went 1-for-3 with a sacrifice hit for Ballard against West Liberty. Hobbs drove in two runs for the Bombers.
Mortensen came up with a big hit during Ballard's victory over West Liberty.
Mortensen doubled once in four at-bats and finished with one run and RBI apiece.
Kopaska threw a strong game in defeat for the Ames softball team against No. 1 and defending state champion Fort Dodge in the 5A regional finals July 12 at Fort Dodge.
Kopaska fired a three-hitter in a 3-1 loss to the Dodgers. She finished the game with four strikeouts.
Peasley had good night offensively for the Ballard baseball team in a 3-2 loss to No. 9 Independence during the 3A substate baseball semifinal at Independence July 11.
Peasley went 2-for-3 with a double and a run for the Bombers.
Rouse went 1-for-2 with a walk for the Ballard baseball team against Independence. Rouse also drove in a run for the Bombers.
Haessig threw a strong game in defeat for Ballard against Independence.
Haessig allowed two earned runs on five hits with two strikeouts in 6 1/3 innings for the Bombers.
Myers gave a great effort for the Gilbert baseball team in its substate loss to Webster City July 11.
Myers gave up one earned run on five hits with six strikeouts in six innings of work on the mound. He also went 2-for-3 with a double and an RBI for the Tigers on offense.
McGuire had a quality outing at the plate for Gilbert during the substate loss to Webster City.
McGuire finished 1-for-3 with two runs and an RBI.
