TCT sports round-up: C-M softball team stays unbeaten, Ballard baseball team splits two RRC games

The No. 4 Collins-Maxwell softball team ran its record to 9-0 overall and 5-0 in the Iowa Star Conference South Division after producing lopsided victories over Colo-NESCO (14-2), Tri-County (14-0) and Lone Tree (12-1) last week.

The Ballard softball team went to 5-6 overall and 3-1 in the Raccoon River Conference after edging Gilbert (5-3) and pounding Carroll (12-4) in conference play and falling to defending 5A state champion Fort Dodge in a competitive 2-0 battle.

In baseball action Ballard won a non-conference game at South Hamilton (13-6) and split RRC games with Gilbert and Carroll. The Bombers suffered a 6-5 loss to Gilbert and they clobbered Carroll by a 12-2 score.

The Collins-Maxwell baseball team crushed Grand View Christian by a 10-0 score and suffered a 5-2 loss at Colo-NESCO in going to 4-7 overall and 2-3 in the ISC South. 

Spartan softball still untouchable

The Collins-Maxwell softball team continued to mow through its opposition with ease last week. The Spartans jumped out to a big lead and coasted against Colo-NESCO Friday and they were never threatened by Tri-County or Lone Tree at the Tri-County Invitational Saturday.

In the victory over Colo-NESCO Erica Houge drove in four runs and threw four scoreless innings, giving up just two hits and striking out five. 

Alexis Houge and Avery Fricke were both 3-for-4 with three runs and three steals. Houge also drove in a run and Fricke picked up three RBIs.

Alexis Houge was 3-for-4 with a double, three steals, four runs and three RBIs in the win over Tri-County. Fricke went 2-for-4 with two runs and four RBIs, Erica Houge doubled twice and drove in two runs, Kenzi Wierson finished 2-for-3 with a double, two runs and an RBI and Sofie Wattonville was 2-for-3 with one run and RBI apiece.

Erica Houge got the win against Tri-County, firing a one-hitter with 14 strikeouts.

In the win over Lone Tree Erica Houge was 3-for-4 with two doubles, a home run and three RBIs. She gave up three hits and struck out 10 as the winning pitcher.

Alexis Houge went 3-for-5 with a double, triple, steal and two runs and RBIs apiece. Fricke was 3-for-4 with three runs and steals apiece, Wierson 2-for-4 with an RBI and Emma Pasquariello and Cypress Erickson each finished 2-for-4 with a run.

Ballard pulls away late against Gilbert

The Ballard softball team ruined Gilbert's debut on its new field June 8 at Gilbert. 

Gilbert forced an extra inning with two runs in the bottom of the seventh inning to tie the score at 3-3. But Ballard scored twice in the eighth and kept the Tigers off the board in the bottom of the inning.

Maggie McCrady was 2-for-4 with two RBIs, Maggie Mortensen finished 2-for-4 with two runs and one RBI and Jada Lande drove in two runs. Brooklyn Baumgardner got the win in relief after allowing one run on one hit with one strikeout in two innings of work.

In the win over Carroll the Bombers scored six runs in the first inning and coasted to victory. McCrady went 2-for-3 with a homer, two runs and three RBIs, Sam Vetter doubled twice and drove in two runs and Kora Johnson and Jocie Hobbs each drove in two runs.

Baumgardner got the win after giving up two earned runs with one strikeout and walk apiece in 3 1/3 innings.

Ballard gave up one run in the second inning and another in the fourth during its loss to Fort Dodge. Statistics were not available for the game at press deadline.

Bats come alive for Ballard baseball team 

The Ballard baseball team reached double figures in runs for the first time this season in its victories over South Hamilton and Carroll.

The Bombers rallied from a 6-5 deficit against South Hamilton with eight runs over the sixth and seventh frames. Jacob Ross homered and drove in three runs, Eli Rouse knocked in two runs, Jaden Peasley went 3-for-5 with three runs and Jaren Njos finished 2-for-3 with three runs and an RBI.

Peasley got the win after surrendering four earned runs on five hits and four walks with nine strikeouts.

Jakson Fleischmann was 3-for-3 with a triple and two runs and RBIs apiece for Ballard in the victory over Carroll. Rouse went 2-for-3 with two runs and RBIs apiece and Njos was 2-for-3 with one run and an RBI. Ross was the winning pitcher after giving up two earned runs on three hits and two walks with six strikeouts in six innings.

Ballard took a 5-3 lead into the bottom of the seventh inning against Gilbert only to see the Tigers tie the game in the bottom of the inning and eventually pull off the victory with a run in the bottom of the 10th.

Colby Calvert was 1-for-4 with one run and RBI apiece and Bryce Haessig finished 2-for-4 with an RBI. Rouse also singled and scored against the Tigers.

Owen Greco took the loss in relief for Ballard after allowing one run on two hits and three walks with four strikeouts in 4 1/3 innings.

Austin Kepple, Weston Kahler lead C-M baseball rout of GVC

Austin Kepple and Weston Kahler had big games for the Collins-Maxwell baseball team in its decisive shutout victory over Grand View Christian June 9 at Collins.

Kepple fired a two-hitter with five strikeouts and one walk in six innings as the winning pitcher. Kahler went 3-for-4 at the plate with a double, run, two steals and three RBIs.

Jace Huntrods finished 3-for-4 with one run and RBI apiece and Josef Dvorak, Blake Huntrods, Luke Huntrods, Caleb Dvorak and Cooper Wierson each had two hits and one RBI. Caleb Dvorak also finished with two doubles and runs apiece and Josef Dvorak and Wierson each scored twice.

Collins-Maxwell couldn't shake a bad second inning in its loss to Colo-NESCO. The Royals scored all five of their runs in the inning.

Wierson took the loss after giving up five runs on three hits and four walks with three strikeouts in 2 2/3 innings. Blake Huntrods was 1-for-2 with an RBI, Calab Dvorak drove in a run and Wierson and Luke Huntrods each scored once.
