Tri-County Times sports round-up: Bomber team gets win at 1A state doubles tennis meet

The Ballard doubles team of Colby Calvert and Caden Miller picked up one victory at the Class 1A state doubles tournament and the No. 5 (Class 1A) Collins-Maxwell softball team is off to a 2-0 start.

The Ballard softball team also won its first two games, defeating Atlantic by a 9-7 score and Bondurant-Farrar in a 9-8 battle. Statistics were not available for the games at press time.

The Ballard baseball team came up short against Bondurant-Farrar (4-2) and the Collins-Maxwell baseball team dropped three competitive games against Madrid (4-2), Ogden (5-1) and Colo-NESCO (6-4). The Bombers fell to 1-4 overall and started off 0-1 in the Raccoon River Conference and the Spartans also dropped to 1-4 and dropped its Iowa Star Conference South Division opener.

Two Bomber doubles team compete in 1A boys state tournament

Calvert and Miller went 1-2 during the 1A boys state doubles tournament May 24-25 at Byrnes Park in Waterloo.

Calvert and Miller defeated Clear Lake's Jaxson Gerhardt and Ben Loge in their opening match of the championship round by scores of 6-2 and 6-3. They fell to Boone's Cody Overland and Matt Zimmermann in straight sets during the quarterfinals with a pair of 6-2 losses then lost to Camanche's Luke Goble and Chase Sbertoli in the consolation second round by scores of 6-3 and 6-2 to end the season.

Jayden Cattell and Jacob Ross also competed for Ballard. They were defeated by Denison-Schleswig's Colin Reis and Harrison Dahm in the championship round opener by scores of 6-3 and 6-4 then by Boone's Jake Judge and Zach Boulton in straight sets during the first round of consolations, 7-6 and 6-3.

Houge sisters spark Spartan softball team 

Erica and Alexis Houge sparked the Collins-Maxwell softball team to 3-0 victories over Roland-Story and Colo-NESCO to open the season. The Spartans defeated the Norse May 23 and the Royals Friday, with both games taking place in Collins.

Erica struck out 16 batters and hit a walk-off three-run homer in the 10th inning to win the game versus Roland-Story. She only gave up 2 hits in the victory.

Alexis was 3-for-4 with a run and 2 steals against the Norse. Avery Fricke also singled and scored and Marissa Boege and Vivian Kahler each added one single.

In the win over Colo-NESCO Erica struck out 11 and gave up 4 hits and 1 hit batsman. She also went 2-for-3 with an RBI at the plate.

Alexis was 2-for-2 with 3 steals, 2 runs and 1 walk against the Royals. Fricke finished 1-for-2 with 1 run, steal and RBI apiece, Boege was 1-for-3 with an RBI and Kahler and Emma Pasquariello each singled once.

Spartan, Bomber baseball team struggle

The Collins-Maxwell baseball team was one step behind each of its opponents last week.

The Spartans fell behind 3-2 against Madrid and failed to score over the last four innings. They couldn't overcome an early 4-0 deficit against Madrid and an early 4-2 deficit against Colo-NESCO.

In the loss against Madrid Caleb Dvorak singled and scored, Caden Hasbrouck singled and drove in a run, Weston Kahler walked and scored and Josef Dvorak and Blake Huntrods each picked up 1 hit.

Hasbrouck took the loss after giving up 2 runs on 2 hits with 4 walks and 2 strikeouts in 2 innings.

In the loss to Ogden Kahler was 2-for-2 with 1 run and Huntrods and Cooper Wierson each picked up 1 single to account for the only Spartan offense in the weather-shortened 5-inning affair. Jace Huntrods took the loss after giving up 4 runs on 6 hits and 3 walks with 3 strikeouts in 4 innings.

Kahler took the loss against Colo-NESCO after allowing 4 runs on 6 hits and 3 walks with 6 strikeouts in 4 innings. Caleb Dvorak had a big game at the plate in defeat, going 4-for-4 with a double, 2 runs and 1 RBI.

Jace Huntrods, Wierson and Luke Huntrods each drove in 1 run and Blake Huntrods singled and scored against the Royals.

Ballard jumped out to a 2-0 lead in its loss to Bondurant-Farrar. But the Bombers were held scoreless over the final 6 innings.

Eli Rouse went 3-for-4 with a run and Jaden Peasley finished 2-for-4 with a double, run and RBI in a losing effort for Ballard. Cattell and Blake Stover each singled once and Ross picked up an RBI.

Rouse was the losing pitcher. He went all 6 innings and surrendered 2 earned runs on 5 hits and 2 walks with 6 strikeouts.
