The Ballard volleyball team fell short against Winterset in its final match of the regular season Oct. 12 at Winterset and Collins-Maxwell went 0-4 at the Iowa Star Conference tournament in Tripoli Saturday.

Ballard ended up 3-5 in the Raccoon River Conference and fell to 11-17 overall after losing to Winterset in four sets.

Collins-Maxwell finished the regular season with a 2-30 record. At the ISC tournament the Spartans were swept by Waterloo Christian (21-2, 21-7), Clarksville (21-13, 21-8), Tripoli (21-15, 21-5) and Riceville (21-14, 23-21).

Here is what we learned from how the Bombers and Spartans fared during the week:

Ballard can't maintain strong start

The Bombers dominated the opening set against Winterset by a 25-16 score. But they dropped a 25-23 heartbreaker in the second and then went flat in the third, losing 25-12.

Ballard came back to put up a great fight in the fourth set. But the Bombers suffered another tough 25-23 loss to end the match.

For the match Ballard was successful on 86 % of its serves and only had three aces. Winterset was good on 91 % of its serves and the Huskies tallied seven aces.

The Bombers were also hurt by a 3.8 % kill-efficiency rate on offense. Ballard did hold a big 67-44 advantage in digs and a 21-13 edge in blocks.

Rylee Scherder had 10 kills, Ava Ashworth eight, Brooklyn Baumgardner four and Memphis Inglett three for Ballard. Scherder also had three digs and two blocks, Ashworth seven digs and three blocks, Baumgardner six blocks and four digs and Inglett four blocks.

Riley Askelsen added 13 assists and 11 digs and Ally Baker nine assists and 10 digs.

Spartans sputter on offense

Collins-Maxwell never got its attack going at the ISC tournament. The Spartans had a negative kill-efficiency rate in two matches and only had 4.1 % efficiency against Riceville and 5.4 % versus Tripoli.

Tori Bienfang

Chloe Wierson led Collins-Maxwell with 11 kills during the tournament. Tori Bienfang finished with 22 digs and five kills and blocks apiece and Kenzi Wierson tallied 20 digs and 14 assists.

Marissa Boege chipped in 25 digs and eight assists. Isabelle Hill had 19 digs and Sofie Wattonville totaled 14.
