Takeaways from Collins-Maxwell's home loss to GMG: Spartans fall, 42-28
The Collins-Maxwell football team suffered its first loss of the season Friday at the hands of GMG. The Spartans fell at Maxwell, 42-28, to drop to 1-1 on the season. They host Don Bosco (0-2) this Friday back at Maxwell. Here are key takeaways from the loss to GMG:
A slow start doomed the Spartans
Collins-Maxwell was outscored 22-0 in the first quarter. That turned out to be the difference in the game. The deficit grew to 36-8 at the half, but by the end of the third quarter the Spartans pulled within 36-22 to make it a game. In they simply couldn't dig out of the early hole.
"GMG was able to capitalize on some miscues we had to get off to a fast start," Collins-Maxwell head coach Greg Davis said. "We were able to clean it up in the second half and kept playing hard to give us a chance at the end. Unfortunately, we came up short."
Collins-Maxwell was forced to grind it out on offense
It took the Spartans 65 plays to amass 228 yards. That is only 3.5 yards per play. They had to fight for every inch to keep in the game against the Wolverines.
Dvorak did it on both sides
Junior Caleb Dvorak had a strong game on both sides of the football field. He stepped in at quarterback and completed 4 of 9 passes for 56 yards and ran for 77 yard and three touchdowns. He also made nine tackels and averaged 24.5 yards on two kick returns.
McKinney steps up
Kayden McKinney had a good night playing both ways as well. McKinney ran for 91 yards and one touchdown on 22 carries and also picked up one sack.
Huntrods brothers force turnovers
Two of the Huntrod brothers — Luke and Blake — accounted for four of the five turnovers forced by Collins-Maxwell. Luke recovered two fumbles. Blake had one interception and fumble recovery apeice.
