Bombers fall to North Polk in 3A regional semifinals: Ballard finishes season at 21-15

The Ballard softball team came up short against Raccoon River Conference rival North Polk in its final two games of the 2021 season.

The Bombers suffered a 5-0 loss to the Comets in the Class 3A regional semifinals July 10 at Huxley. They finished the season with a 21-15 record.

The Bomber defense was stout in a losing effort. Ballard went the entire game without an error.

Brynna Huen singled three times to account for all three Bomber hits in the game. Ella Husak also had a steal for the Bombers on offense.

Brooklyn Baumgardner kept North Polk off the board until the fourth inning. North Polk scored one run in the fourth, then went for three in the fifth to gain some separation and added another insurance run in the sixth.

Baumgardner gave up five earned runs on eight hits going all seven innings as the losing pitcher. She finished the night with five strikeouts and three walks. 

Ballard also suffered an 8-3 loss to the Comets in the final game of the regular season July 5 at Alleman. The Bombers ended up 9-9 in the RRC.

A rough sixth inning doomed Ballard in the loss. The Bombers took a 3-2 lead into the sixth then gave up six runs.

Matty Beerbower was 2-for-2 with a double, Molly Houge and Brynna Huen both singled and drove in a run and Lily Hillebrand picked up an RBI. Husak, Jocie Hobbs and Maggie Mortensen each singled and scored and Hobbs and Mortensen added one steal apiece.

Maggie McCrady took the loss after giving up one run on two hits and five walks with two strikeouts in three innings. Avery Phillips allowed three earned runs on one hit and five walks in two innings and Hailey Walzer surrendered two earned runs on three hits with two strikeouts in 1 2/3 innings.
