C-M boys cream Crusaders, run past Rockets: Spartans improve to 7-12

MAXWELL – The Collins-Maxwell boys’ basketball team was in complete control from the start against Valley Lutheran Friday, posting a decisive 71-24 victory over the Crusaders. 

The Spartans built a 15-point lead after the first quarter and led 39-10 at the half. They went up by 45 points after three quarters and coasted the rest of the way to improve to 7-12 on the season and 5-6 in the Iowa Star Conference South Division. 

Collins-Maxwell recorded an incredible 26 offensive rebounds in the game. The Spartans had 47 rebounds overall and 16 steals on defense. 

Austin Kepple led a balanced Spartan attack with 14 points and six rebounds. Luke Huntrods added 13 points and six rebounds, Dane Beattie drilled two 3-pointers and tallied 13 points off the bench and Weston Kahler contributed 10 points, six assists, five steals and four rebounds.

Caleb Dvorak chipped in eight points and five rebounds and Brayden Bartleson six points and eight boards.

CHURDAN – Collins-Maxwell dominated the glass in and had a solid shooting night from the field in an 80-62 non-conference victory over Paton-Churdan Jan. 28. 

The Spartans outrebounded the Rockets, 48-28, including 20-11 on the offensive glass. They also shot 44 % from the field and held Paton-Churdan to 4 of 17 shooting from 3-point range in improving to 6-12 on the season. 

Collins-Maxwell outscored Paton-Churdan by 12 points in the second quarter to take a 40-35 lead at the half. The Spartans went up by seven points after three quarters then stepped up defensively down the stretch – holding the Rockets to nine points in the fourth quarter to sew up the victory. 

Mason Markley went for 25 points, 11 rebounds and three blocks and Weston Kahler 20 points, nine rebounds, five assists and three steals for Collins-Maxwell. Luke Huntrods added 17 points, 13 rebounds and seven assists, Austin Kepple 10 points and five assists, Jace Huntrods six points and three assists and Caleb Dvorak two points and seven rebounds. 

Joe Carey had 18 points and three assists and steals apiece and Bradyn Smith 13 points, 11 rebounds, five assists and five steals for Paton-Churdan.
