Ballard’s Christensen wins RRC title at 160: Long, Wacha place second at conference meet

CARLISLE – Ballard picked up one individual championship and two runner-up medals at the Raccoon River Conference wrestling tournament Saturday. 

Gabe Christensen was Ballard’s lone conference champion.  

Christensen, ranked fifth at 160 in 2A, defeated Perry’s Keegan Snyder by major decision, 11-3, and edged Winterset’s Kael Forsyth by a 5-4 decision in the semifinals. Forsyth is 28-8 on the season. 

In the championship match Christensen pulled off a 9-4 decision over Gilbert’s Kruz Pierce to improve his season record to 31-6. 

Gage Long took second at 138 and Nick Wacha was runner-up at 220 for the Bombers. 

Long, ranked eighth in 2A, defeated Adel-Desoto-Minburn's Kadin O’Connor by technical fall – 16-0 in 2:34 – and Boone’s Kyle Sharp by a 7-1 decision. In the finals he lost to Carroll’s Carter Drake, who sports a 25-8 record, by a 7-3 decision. 

Wacha received a bye in the quarterfinals and pinned Boone’s McGuire Bryant in 44 seconds to reach the finals. He lost by fall to Gilbert’s Joe Larimore by fall in the finals and concluded the tournament with a 12-8 overall record. 

The other Ballard wrestlers to place on the day were: Luke Hartsook (fourth at 120), Lane Kahler (fifth at 126), Reese Broer (fourth at 132), Thomsen Harrison (sixth at 145), Gavin Soash (sixth at 152), Jeremiah Wilkinson (sixth at 182) and Jack Chism (fifth at 285). 

Hartsook was 2-2, pinning Winterset’s Travis Allen during the quarterfinals and A-D-M's Evan Vanorny in the consolation semifinals – both in 3:02. Kahler finished 3-2 with Gilbert’s Holt Bellon in 25 seconds during the prelims, beating North Polk’s Colton Manock by technical fall, 18-2, in the consolation first round and pinned Boone’s Gage Smith in 1:38 during the fifth-place match. 

Broer was 2-2 with a 9-8 victory over Carroll’s Cooper Ludwig in the quarterfinals and an 8-2 win over Gilbert’s Kekoa McKinney in the consolation semifinals. Harrison went 1-3 with a win by fall over A-D-M's Chris Simmons in 4:09 during the consolation first round and Soash also finished 1-3 with a fall over Carlisle’s Adyn Wycoff in 1:09 during the consolation first round. 

Chism finished 2-2 after pinning Perry’s Alan Gomez in 5:01 during the quarterfinals and North Polk’s Cole Sanger in 2:38 during the fifth-place match. 

Ballard placed fifth in the team standings with 122 points.

Bondurant-Farrar won the RRC team championship with 187 points. Winterset took second with 175 points, Carroll was third with 164 and Boone placed fourth with 127.

HUXLEY - Ballard had no trouble with Adel-Desoto-Minburn in a Raccoon River Conference dual meet Jan. 28. 

The Bombers rolled to a 63-18 victory over the Tigers to improve to 17-9 on the season. They totaled seven pins and one victory by decision. 

Lane Kahler pinned A-D-M's Tate Hook in one minute, 34 seconds at 126 pounds. Gage Long scored a fall over Kadin O’Connor in 1:16 at 138, Thomsen Harrison stuck Chris Simmons in 4:50 at 145, Gabe Christensen defeated Nathan Royer in 2:26 at 160 and Jayden Swain added a fall over Penn Weieneth in 1:36 at 170. 

Jeremiah Wilkson pinned the Tigers’ Dallas Trigg in 3:21 at 182 and Mason Askelsen defeated Gabe Heitz in 3:05 at 195. Luke Hartsook earned a 10-6 victory over A-D-M's Evan Vanorny for the other Ballard win on the mat. 

Jack Shepherd (113), Nick Wacha (220) and Brady Ehresman (285) each received a forfeit for the Bombers.
