Spartan boys top rival Baxter, 64-54: C-M gets overtime win at Colfax-Mingo

MAXWELL – The Collins-Maxwell boys’ basketball team won its second game in as many days Friday with a 64-54 home victory over rival Baxter. 

After the first half ended in a tie Collins-Maxwell outscored Baxter 40-30 in the second half to improve its record to 4-7 overall and 3-3 in the Iowa Star Conference South Division. 

The Spartans held Baxter to 30 % shooting. They also posted a huge 51-36 rebounding advantage. 

Luke Huntrods had 18 points and six rebounds, Weston Kahler 13 points, eight rebounds and five assists and Austin Kepple came off the bench to deliver 15 points and nine rebounds. Mason Markley tacked on nine points, 15 rebounds and two blocks for Collins-Maxwell in the win.  

Trice Clapper led Baxter with 13 points and eight rebounds. Nate McMinamen added 10 points, seven boards and five blocks.

COLFAX - Collins-Maxwell had just enough of an edge shooting the ball to down Colfax-Mingo in overtime, 67-62, Jan. 7. 

It was a game where neither team shot well. The Spartans only made 35 % of its field goals, but the Tigerhawks shot just 29 % from the field. 

Collins-Maxwell trailed by three points going into the fourth quarter. The Spartans got hot offensively at the right time, scoring 19 points in the fourth to force overtime and then putting up 13 more points in the extra session to pull away for the non-conference win. 

Mason Markley went for 19 points, 20 rebounds and three blocks for Collins-Maxwell in the win. Luke Huntrods added 20 points and four rebounds, Weston Kahler 15 points and six assists and Austin Kepple seven points and four rebounds. 

Jake Nichols went for 25 points and a school-record 30 rebounds for Colfax-Mingo in a losing effort. Cole Bracewell added 17 points and Zach Steenhoek six pionts and 10 assists for the Tigerhawks.
