Mason Askelsen, ranked seventh at 195 pounds in Class 2A, was a perfect 4-0 for Ballard at the Mendenhall Duals in Ames Saturday.

AMES – The Ballard wrestling team ended up going 2-2 at the Jack Mendenhall Duals Saturday with wins over Pocahontas Area and Perry.

The Bombers crushed Perry by a 69-11 score and trounced Pocahontas Area, 55-24. They lost two close duals against Class 3A schools, falling to Ames by a 42-39 score and Indianola in a 36-33 battle to put their season record at 13-7.

“I thought we wrestled really well,” Ballard head coach Casey Christensen said. “Indianola might have been our best dual all year even though we lost it. Top to bottom the way we wrestled was probably the best we have all year. We lost a couple of duals we could’ve won and I sent some kids to a JV (tournament) and if they were here I think we win those.”

Mason Askelsen continued his remarkable senior season for Ballard.

Askelsen, ranked seventh at 195 in 2A, pinned Ames’ Briar Fitz in 1:42 and Perry’s Brian Hernandez in 34 seconds and won by a 10-3 decision over Indianola’s Walker Whalen – ranked seventh in 3A. He also picked up a forfeit against Pocahontas Area.

“Things are going really well this year,” Askelsen. “In the past I’ve had trouble converting how I do at practice onto the mat. This year Coach Casey, Dillon Combs and Mitchell Broer have helped a ton with that and I’m just having fun.”

Gabe Christensen, rated fifth at 160, was 4-0 at the Mendenhall Duals. He pinned Indianola’s Hawkins Jacobson in 5:07, Ames’ Kyle Martin in 1:02, Pocahontas Area’s Ryan Panbecker in 1:46 and Perry’s Keegan Snyder in 1:14.

Gabe Christensen had a 4-0 day at 160 for the Ballard wrestling team at the Mendenhall Duals in Ames Saturday. Christensen helped the Bombers go 2-2 as a team.
