Spartan boys whip Crusaders, fall to Raiders

MAXWELL - The Collins-Maxwell boys’ basketball team had difficulty taking care of the ball and making shots outside in a 74-46 loss to Dunkerton Friday.

The Spartans turned the ball over 24 times and only made 3 of 18 3-pointers in falling to 2-6 on the season. 

Collins-Maxwell only trailed by one point after the first quarter. The Spartans went cold in the second quarter, allowing the Raiders to build a 37-22 lead at the half.

Collins-Maxwell tried to hang around in the third quarter. But the Spartans couldn’t make up any ground and they ran out of gas late.

Mason Markley had 14 points and 11 rebounds for Collins-Maxwell in a losing effort. Luke Huntrods tacked on 11 points and four boards, Caleb Dvorak six points and 10 rebounds, Weston Kahler eight points and six assists and Jace Huntrods seven points and four assists.

Kaden Behrens went for 21 points and five rebounds for Dunkerton. Casey Gardner added 15 points and eight assists for the Raiders.

CEDAR FALLS - Collins-Maxwell finished each half strong to overpower Valley Lutheran, 73-45, Dec. 15.

The Spartans outscored the Crusaders 25-14 in the second quarter to take a 39-24 lead at the half. Valley Lutheran pulled within 10 after three quarters, but Collins-Maxwell ended the game on a 23-5 run to improve to 2-5 overall and 2-3 in the Iowa Star Conference South Division.

A 41-24 rebounding advantage helped Collins-Maxwell prevail. The Spartans also shot 45.5 % from the field to 40 % for Valley Lutheran.

Mason Markley scored 22 points on 9 of 13 shooting, including 4 of 5 3-pointers, and he also pulled down six rebounds. Luke Huntrods added 18 points, Weston Kahler 10 points and 10 assists and Caleb Dvorak four points, 13 rebounds, four assists and one block.

Jace Huntrods added eight points and four rebounds. Blake Huntrods and Brayden Bartleson chipped in four points apiece and Dane Beattie three points.

Adric Schmitz scored 16 points and pulled down six rebounds and Donovan Elmore added 11 points and six boards for Valley Lutheran.
