Spartan girls rally past Wildcats to stay perfect: No. 8 C-M goes to 8-0

RICEVILLE - A fierce rally against Riceville Saturday kept the Collins-Maxwell girls’ basketball team unbeaten after the Spartans pulled off a 39-28 victory over the Wildcats.

Collins-Maxwell, ranked eighth in Class 1A, improved to 8-0 on the season after outscoring Riceville 16-2 in the fourth quarter. The Spartans had trailed 26-23 going into the fourth quarter after being outscored 10-4 in the third.

A big edge in trips to the foul line helped the Spartans prevail. Collins-Maxwell made 16 of 25 free throws to Riceville’s 10 of 16 showing.

The Spartans also held the Wildcats to just eight field goals and 17-percent shooting from the field. They also forced 19 turnovers.

Reagan Franzen had 12 points, 12 rebounds and five steals and Alexis and Erica Houge each scored 11 points. Alexis Houge also tallied four steals and two assists and Erica seven rebounds and three steals.

Brooke Christie chipped in three points and assists apiece and Kenzi Wierson two points and six rebounds.

Joy Beran had nine points and four steals and O’Malley Fair six points and 10 boards for Riceville.

MAXWELL - Three dominant quarters resulted in a decisive 69-32 victory for Collins-Maxwell over Meskwaki in Iowa Star Conference South Division play Friday.

The Spartans outscore the Warriors by at least 12 points in each of the first three quarters. They led 39-14 at the half then blanked Meskwaki in the third quarter to put the game away and improve to 4-0 in the conference and 7-0 overall.

Collins-Maxwell had 17 offensive rebounds and 14 steals in the victory. The Spartans also shot the ball well, making 47 percent of its field goals, including an 8 of 20 showing from long range, and converting 9 of 12 free throws.

Reagan Franzen had 19 points, seven rebounds, five assists and three steals and Alexis Houge 15 points, four rebounds, three assists and two steals for Collins-Maxwell in the victory. Brooke Christie tacked on 12 points and one block and Erica Houge finished with seven points, nine rebounds, four assists and four steals.

Kenzi Wierson delivered four points and seven rebounds for the Spartans. Marissa Boege and Chloe Wierson four points apiece, Avery Fricke three points and Mary Staudt one point and two rebounds.

TRAER - Reagan Franzen posted a triple-double and the Houge sisters each went for 20 points to lead Collins-Maxwell to a decisive 74-25 victory over North Tama in Iowa Star Conference play Dec. 8.

Franzen put up 28 points, 10 rebounds and 10 assists. She made 8 of 10 field goals, including both of her 3-point attempts, and 10 of 13 free throws and added four steals.

Alexis Houge was 9 of 19 from the field and she added five assists and steals apiece. Erica Houge made 7 of 11 shots and 3 of 4 3-pointers and tacked on seven rebounds for the Spartans.

Collins-Maxwell put the game away in the middle two quarters. The Spartans outscored the Redhawks 46-10 over the second and third quarters in improving their record to 6-0 overall and 3-0 in the ISC South Division.

Brooke Christie chipped in three points, six rebounds and three assists and Avery Fricke three points, two assists and two steals. Kenzi Wierson tacked on three rebounds for Collins-Maxwell.
