Third-ranked Ballard girls edge No. 7 B-F: Bombers stay unbeaten with 45-37 victory

HUXLEY - The Ballard girls’ basketball team survived its first big test of the season Dec. 8 with a 45-37 home victory over Bondurant-Farrar in a battle of top-10 Class 4A teams.

The Bombers, ranked third in 4A, came on strong at the end of each half to outlast the seventh-ranked Bluejays in a Raccoon River Conference showdown. 

Ballard overcame an early 13-9 deficit to lead 22-21 at the half. The Bombers maintained the slip one-point lead after three quarters then outscored the Bluejays by seven points down the final stretch to improve to 5-0 overall and 2-0 in the conference.

The Bombers prevailed despite shooting just 37 percent from the field and being outrebouned, 25-19. 

Ballard had a big edge at the line, making 15 of 21 free throws to Bondurant-Farrar’s 5 of 10 showing. The Bombers also forced 20 turnovers and only committed 10.

Meg Rietz stepped up with a big all-around game to spark the Bomber victory. Rietz had 10 points, nine rebounds, three steals and three blocks.

Molly Ihle also turned in another solid complete game for Ballard with nine points, six rebounds, four steals and three assists. Brooke Loewe led Ballard in scoring for the third game in a row with a game-high 16 points.

Cassidy Thompson chipped in three points and one block, Kylie Rigby three points and two steals, Lily Hillebrand one rebound and steal apiece and Ashley Wuestenberg one rebound.

Bondurant-Farrar fell to 1-1 both overall and in the conference. 

Katie Fogarty, Avery Fried and Katelyn Lappe each scored 10 points for the Bluejays. Fogarty also had seven rebounds and one steal, Fried three boards and one steal and Lappe nine rebounds and two blocks.
