Spartans struggle to finish against Wildcats, Warriors: C-M goes 0-3 during week

RICEVILLE - The Collins-Maxwell boys’ basketball team ran out of steam late in a 53-49 loss to Riceville Saturday.

The Spartans used a dominant second quarter to build a 33-22 lead at the half. They were still up 10 going into the fourth quarter.

But then Collins-Maxwell went cold and Riceville heated up. The Spartans were outscored 19-5 over the final eight minutes, allowing the Wildcats to steal the victory.

The loss put Collins-Maxwell at 1-5 on the season. The Spartans held the Wildcats to 35.6 % shooting from the field, but they were outrebounded, 45-28, and also turned the ball over 15 times.

Mason Markley had 21 points, seven rebounds and two blocks for Collins-Maxwell in a losing effort. Weston Kahler and Luke Huntrods added nine points apiece, with Kahler also contributing four rebounds and three steals and Huntrods six rebounds, two assists and two steals.

Dane Beattie chipped in six points, Jace Huntrods four points and three assists and Caleb Dvorak six rebounds and three assists.

Ryder Fair had 11 points and Charlie Ring 10 points, 11 rebounds and five assists for Riceville.

MAXWELL - A strong start wasn’t enough for Collins-Maxwell in a 57-49 Iowa Star Conference South Division loss to Meskwaki Friday.

The Spartans led by 10 points after the first quarter. But Meskwaki closed within seven after three quarters then outscored Collins-Maxwell 19-7 down the stretch to drop the Spartans to 1-3 in the South Division and 1-5 overall.

Collins-Maxwell lost despite shooting 50 percent from the field. The Spartans were hurt by 22 turnovers and an 0 of 8 showing from the foul line.

Weston Kahler had 19 points and four rebounds and Mason Markley 12 points and seven boards for Collins-Maxwell. Jace Huntrods tacked on seven points and four steals, Caleb Dvorak six points and rebounds apiece and Luke Huntrods five points and seven boards.

TRAER - Collins-Maxwell wasn’t able to stop North Tama from hitting shots from long range in a 67-53 loss to the Redhawks Dec. 8. 

North Tama made 12 3-pointers. Collins-Maxwell only went 3 of 17 from downtown and shot just 31 percent from the field in falling to 1-3 on the season and 1-2 overall.

The Spartans trailed 26-19 at the half. North Tama took full charge in the quarter, building its lead to 17 points by the end of the period and then withstanding 20 points by Collins-Maxwell in the fourth quarter.

Mason Markley finished with 14 points and four rebounds and Luke Huntrods had 12 points and 11 boards for Collins-Maxwell. Caleb Dvorak tacked on 11 points and eight boards, Weston Kahler nine points and four rebounds, Jace Huntrods four points and two steals and Dane Beattie three points and two rebounds.

Gabe Kopriva made five 3-pointers and led North Tama with 18 points and seven rebounds. Adam Greiner contributed 17 points and nine boards and Devin McKinley 15 points and eight assists for the Redhawks.
