COLO - Collins-Maxwell showed why it is one of the top teams in Class 1A with an impressive 59-31 victory over defending Iowa Star Conference South Division champion Colo-NESCO Dec. 1.

Colo-NESCO came out and did a great job slowing down leading Collins-Maxwell scorer Reagan Franzen in the first half. The Royals limited Franzen to three points over the first two quarters.

But it didn’t matter. Other players stepped up to fill in the void and the Spartan defense was superb, forcing 20 turnovers and holding the Royals to just 25 % shooting from the field and four free-throw attempts.

“We’ve got people who can score every night and then we have all the right role players to come in and do what they’ve got to do,” Collins-Maxwell head coach Justin Flaws said. “I’m hoping that it continues to gel.”

Freshman Erica Houge continued the hot start to her freshman year with 19 points, five rebounds and four steals.

“It feels good,” Houge said of her performance. “I just try to help our whole team out.”

In the fourth quarter Houge showed her versatility and command of the Spartan offense as Collins-Maxwell ran everything through her from the high post.

“He (Flaws) just told me to go in the high post and the short corner was supposed to step in so I was looking for that,” Erica Houge said. “If it wasn’t open just pass it out and if it was open I’d take it.”

The focus on Franzen also opened things up for Kenzi Wierson.

Wierson had been a little off during Collins-Maxwell’s first two games. But she went for 14 points on 7 of 13 shooting and added four rebounds against Colo-NESCO.

“I finally felt comfortable with my shot,” Wierson said. “I went in and played my game.”

Brooke Christie also stepped up, hitting two 3-pointers and totaling six points, three assists and three steals. Franzen was still productive despite the extra defensive focus on her, finishing with 12 points, nine rebounds and four assists.

Collins-Maxwell's Chloe Wierson goes up for a shot during the Royals' 59-31 win over Colo-NESCO Dec. 1 in Colo.

The victory put Collins-Maxwell at 3-0 overall and got the Spartans off to a 1-0 start in the ISC South Division. Colo-NESCO fell to 0-2 and 0-1 respectively.

Izabell Voelker had 11 points and four rebounds and Jenna Banks 10 points and two steals for Colo-NESCO. McKenzie Niemeyer put up two points, eight rebounds and three assists and steals apiece and Jenna Hill chipped in four points and seven rebounds.
