COLO - The hot hand of Luke Huntrods and clutch free throws from Caleb Dvorak helped Collins-Maxwell hold off Colo-NESCO, 56-53, in its season opener Dec. 1.

The Spartans nearly let a 16-point lead get away. Kenny Cutler took a 3-point shot that bounced and went in with 15 seconds left to pull Colo-NESCO within 54-53. The Spartans then lofted a long pass down the court to Dvorak, who was fouled with 12 seconds left.

After making just one of his first three free throws Dvorak calmly sank the front end of a one-and-one to get the bonus shot. He also made the second free throw, forcing Colo-NESCO to attempt a 3 or hope to get fouled on a shot inside the arc.

“Throughout the offseason I’ve been practicing free throws just dreaming of this moment,” Dvorak said. “I knew once I got fouled I could make those two. I stepped up to the line, had all the confidence in the world and made both of them.”

The Royals attempted a 3 on their next possession and were off the mark, but Bradley came up with a steal to give them one look. Tanner Ingle got an open look from downtown, but it was just off at the buzzer to give the Spartans the win.

“This is a big game for us, kind of a rivalry with Colo,” Dvorak said. “It just means a lot to make those free throws and win this game.”

Turnovers and poor defensive stretches hurt Collins-Maxwell in the second half. Spartan head coach Wes Stover said his team showed it has plenty to work on, but he was glad they came up when it mattered the most.

“I'm not happy how we let a double digit lead disappear and that we gave them a chance at the end,” Stover said. “But we were able to make plays down the stretch when we needed them.”

Collins-Maxwell got its big lead because of Huntrods.

Huntrods hit three 3-pointers and scored 13 points in the second quarter to help the Spartans take a 36-24 lead at the break. He hit two more 3-pointers early in the third quarter to help push the lead to 16.

“Our defense is made to create layups and 3-pointers, so as we went around if it was an open 3 I’m taking it,” Huntrods said. “I made quite a few.”

Luke Huntrods (33) scored 19 points to lead Collins-Maxwell past Colo-NESCO in its season opener, 56-53, Dec. 1 in Colo.

Huntrods finished with 19 points and four rebounds. He made 5 of 9 3-pointers and 7 of 13 shots overall from the field.

“I wouldn’t have shot those if my teammates wouldn’t have moved the ball around,” Luke Huntrods said. “I’ve got to thank my teammates for that.”

Mason Markley also had a big game for Collins-Maxwell. Markley made four 3-pointers and finished with 15 points, 11 rebounds, four assists, and two steals and blocks apiece.

Jace Huntrods added 11 points and four steals. Dvorak tallied seven points, six rebounds and three assists and Weston Kahler four points and rebounds apiece plus three steals.

Ingle led Colo-NESCO with a game-high 20 points. Freshman Lucas Frohwein stepped up with 16 points and 11 rebounds in his first varsity game and Cutler had nine points and eight assists for the Royals.
