Two Spartans take first at Dennis Field Invitational: Dunbaugh wins at 132, Sampson 182

WOODWARD - The Collins-Maxwell wrestling team opened the season by crowning two individual champions at the Dennis Field Invitational Saturday.

Freshmen Nate Dumbaugh and Brody Sampson both took first for Collins-Maxwell. Jacob Pierick came in second to help the Spartans score 26 points and place eighth despite only having six wrestlers competing.

Dumbaugh won at 132 pounds. He pinned Colfax-Mingo’s Austin Lee  in two minutes, 27 seconds, Martensdale St. Marys’ Julian Huston in 56 seconds and Western Christian’s Blaike Bonestroo in 1:49.

Sampson was champion at 182. He went 4-0 with two pins and two victories by major decision.

Sampson won a 13-0 major decision over Roland-Story’s Jackson Sterle and pinned Woodward-Granger’s Kade Pollich in 4:25 during his first two matches. He pulled off a 15-3 victory over Southeast Warren’s Bradley Metz in his third match then finished the day by pinning Baxter’s Jacob Hiemstra in 24 seconds.

Pierick was runner-up at 120. He lost by a 6-2 decision to Martensdale St. Marys’ Conor Cassady and pinned Woodward-Granger’s Joel Harney in 1:58.

Woodward-Granger won the team championship at the tournament with 165.5 points. Martensdale St. Marys took second with 111 points and Southeast Warren third with 102.
