MARTENSDALE - Collins-Maxwell couldn’t take care of the football and Martensdale St. Marys made them pay for it in the 8-man football playoff second round Friday.

The Spartans coughed up the ball seven times, directly leading to three Blue Devil defensive touchdowns and a safety, in a 65-28 loss.

Most of the damage was done in the first quarter. Martensdale St. Marys took advantage of four Collins-Maxwell mistakes to build an insurmountable 44-6 lead.

“It's hard to compete, let alone win a game when you turn the ball over four times in the first quarter,” Collins-Maxwell head coach Cory Crnkovich said. “I don't know if we were scared or the weather was too cold. We did not come to play. MSM had some solid athletes and they played with some swag.”

By the end of the third quarter Martensdale St. Marys had built a 65-14 lead. Collins-Maxwell did go down swinging, scoring two unanswered touchdowns as Brody Sampson returned an interception 46 yards to paydirt and caught a 40-yard touchdown pass from Luke Huntrods.

“The only takeaway from a coaching standpoint, was the toughness the senior class displayed,” Crnkovich said. “Those five guys could have quit in the first quarter. They played their hearts out. It's not the way they wanted it to end, but they have a lot to be proud of! First senior class to go all the way through!”

Rylee Scott, A.J. Smith Mason Markley, Mitchell Bienfang and Hunter Clair were the five Spartan seniors participating in the game.

Rylee Scott

Scott ran for 52 yards and one touchdown and made 1.5 tackles for loss, Smith caught a 46-yard pass and made four tackles, Markley threw for 46 yards, Bienfang tallied four tackles and two tackles for loss and Clair had one catch for six yards.

Sampson also had a good game for the Spartans. He ran for 54 yards and a touchdown, had a 40-yard touchdown reception and made six tackles to go along with the interception return for a touchdown.

Collins-Maxwell ended the season with a 4-5 record.

“We have a long way to go if we want to get back to another winning season,” Crnkovich said. “We have to find some passion and play with heart. Good teams can show up and be .500. Great teams show up ready to work everyday and don't solely rely on just talent. They have to put the work in this offseason.”

Martensdale St. Marys will take an 8-0 record into the playoff third round this Friday. William Amfahr had three interceptions and returned two for touchdowns and Jack Franey had 197 yards and five touchdowns passing against Collins-Maxwell.
