Spartans stomp Saints in playoff first round: C-M cruises to 56-8 victory
GARDEN GROVE - Collins-Maxwell responded to its worst performance of the season with perhaps its best in a 56-8 victory over Mormon Trail during the first round of the 8-man football playoffs Friday.
The Spartans (4-4) were coming off of a 56-6 loss to English Valleys in their final game of the regular season. They did a complete 180 from that game on Friday, dominating Mormon Trail in every aspect to make a statement heading into the second round.
“We prepared very well,” Collins-Maxwell head coach Cory Crnkovich said. “The guys were locked in everyday this week. Their mindset this week was ‘we aren't going home without a win.”
Collins-Maxwell blew the game open in the second half. The Spartans outscored the Saints 38-0 over the final two quarters.
In the third quarter Jace Huntrods threw two touchdown passes, one from 13 yards out to his brother Luke and another from 23 yards to Caleb Dvorak and Rylee Scott added a 2-yard touchdown run. In the fourth quarter Scott ran one in from six yards out, Hunter Clair broke free for a 30-yard touchdown scamper and Brody Sampson added a 10-yard run into the end zone.
Clair scored two of Collins-Maxwell’s three touchdowns in the first half. He caught a 15-yard pass from Huntrods and also had a 15-yard run into the end zone.
A.J. Smith added a 20-yard touchdown run in the first quarter for the Spartans. Mormon Trail’s only score came on a 1-yard touchdown pass from Ty Hysell to Gavin Dixson in the second quarter.
Jace Huntrods completed 13 of 19 passes for 134 yards and three touchdowns with no interceptions. Smith ran for 107 yards on just eight carries.
“Jace did a solid job taking what the defense gave him,” Crnkovich said. “He was efficient and didn't force the ball. Our line did a heck of a job blocking all night. A.J. did a great job finding the hole or the cutbacks.”
Clair added four catches for 51 yards and 47 yards rushing. Dvorak had four catches for 43 yards, Luke Huntrods four for 33, Scott 33 yards rushing and Sampson 27 yards on the ground.
As a team Collins-Maxwell had 383 yards, including 238 on the ground.
The Spartan defense was fantastic. In addition to holding Mormon Trail to just one score they also forced four turnovers and recorded four sacks.
“I say it all the time - our defensive coordinator needs a pay raise,” Crnkovich said.
Mitchell Bienfang led Collins-Maxwell with 8.5 tackles and two sacks on defense. Dvorak had 5.5 tackles, two fumble recoveries and an interception, Scott tallied 5.5 stops and 1.5 sacks and Smith came up with 6.5 tackles and an interception.
Collins-Maxwell will have its hands full in the second round against Martensdale St. Marys (7-0).
“They like to throw the rock,” Crnkovich said. “We have to be disciplined on both sides of the ball. We have been telling the guys all year long, we haven't put a full game together. We haven't played a solid four quarters once this year. If we play the way I know this team can play for four quarters, we will win this game.”
The game will start at 7 p.m. this Friday in Martensdale.
