Ballard tops Winterset in final RRC match: Bombers go 3-1 at Indianola tournament

HUXLEY - The Ballard volleyball team wrapped up the regular season with a four-set home victory over Winterset Oct. 13. 

The Bombers lost a 25-23 heartbreaker in the opening set. That didn’t sit well with them.

The next three sets saw Ballard take complete control, dominating by scores of 25-13, 25-15 and 25-12 to win the match. With the win the Bombers finished with a winning 6-3 record in the Raccoon River Conference and improved to 12-13 overall.

Ballard averaged 10 kills per set at 18.9-percent efficiency compared to Winterset’s 5.8 kills and 3.2-percent efficiency. The Bombers also had a big 17-10.8 advantage in digs per set and a slight 8-6 edge in aces.

Ava Ashworth recorded 12 kills, seven digs, two blocks and one ace; Carley Wilson eight kills, 13 digs, five aces and one assist and Natalie Maher six kills, three, two assists and one block for Ballard in the win. Kaylee Van Pelt finished with 13 assists, seven digs and four kills and Brynna Huen 14 assists, four digs and one ace.

Molly Houge added 23 digs, Rylie Askelsen four digs, one assist and one ace and Hailey Battani three digs. Cecilia Christensen had five kills and one dig and block apiece, Brooklyn Baumgardner three kills and two blocks, Maya Baker two digs and one kill and Mya Patterson one kill.

INDIANOLA - Ballard posted a 3-1 record at the Indianola Invitational Oct. 10, picking up wins over Indianola, Stanton and Creston and falling to Glenwood.

Ballard topped Indianola in three sets. The Bombers were overpowered by a 25-14 score in the first set, but came back to win a 26-24 thriller in the second then take the rally game in a 15-13 squeaker.

Glenwood was the Bombers’ other match in championship play. They were swept by scores of 25-14 and 25-18.

In pool play Ballard swept Stanton by 21-15 and 21-16 scores and Creston by 21-10 and 21-18 margins.

For the tournament Kayle Van Pelt had 24 assists, four kills, four digs and two blocks and Brynna Huen 32 assists, 12 digs and one ace. Ava Ashworth finished with 32 kills, 21 digs, four aces and one block and Carley Wilson 28 digs, 18 kills, four aces and two blocks.

Molly Houge tacked on 28 digs, three assists and one ace and Natalie Maher eight kills three digs and one block. Hailey Battani finished with eight digs and two kills and aces apiece, Brooklyn Baumgardner four kills and blocks apiece plus one dig, Cecilia Christensen five blocks, four kills and three digs and Riley Askelsen seven assists, three aces and two digs.

Mya Patterson chipped in two kills and blocks apiece, Maya Baker one ace and Kerrigan Boock one dig.
