BOONE - The Ballard football team jumped all over Boone early and coasted the rest of the way to a 39-6 road victory Friday.

The Bombers were playing at Boone for the second week in a row.

Their home game against Humboldt scheduled to be played in Huxley last week was to Boone due to derecho damage at Rich Strouse Field. Ballard defeated Humboldt by a 31-14 score and the Bombers were even more dominant on Friday against Boone.

Ballard scored three touchdowns in the first quarter to put the game away early. The Bombers led 26-0 at the half and were never threatened in improving to 5-1 overall and 3-1 in Class 3A District 2.

“Our kids love to compete and again this week  had a great week of practice,” Ballard co-head coach Corey Vespestad said. “They are thankful for the opportunity to play the game they love each Friday night. Coach (Kyle) Howard and I are thankful  to be surrounded by a great coaching staff.  They do a great job of helping us prepare for our opponents each week and helping implement our game plan.”

Ballard quarterback Connor Drew overcame three interceptions by throwing for three touchdowns. He finished with 161 yards passing and 46 rushing.

Drew found Nolan Shonhorst on a 1-yard pass and Sam Petersen on a 23-yard toss for his first two touchdown passes in the first quarter. He also hooked up with Logan Harmeyer on a 17-yard scoring strike in the second quarter.

Wil Jennings had touchdown runs from three and seven yards out and Gabe Christensen added a 5-yard scoring jaunt. Jennings ran for 49 yards, Christensen 15, Petersen 12 and Mason Murphy 10.

Murphy was Ballard’s top receiver with three catches for 53 yards. Harmeyer made two grabs for 27 yards, Schonhorst three for 23, Petersen one for 23, Brenden Kaldenberg one for 22 and Jacob Ihle one for 13.

On defense Ballard did an excellent job stuffing Boone for most of the night. The Bombers only gave up one scoring drive and they forced five turnovers.

Colby Calvert had 4.5 tackles and an interception, Connor Finch and Carter Marlatt each picked off a pass, Christensen tallied two tackles and a fumble recovery and Nick Wacha recovered a fumble and made 1.5 stops. Jeremiah Wilkinson led Ballard in tackles with seven and Carter Harms added six.

Boone’s only touchdown came on a 22-yard pass from Morgan Smith to Tegan Bock in the third quarter. The Toreadors fell to 0-6 overall and 0-4 in the district.

Ballard will conclude the COVID-19-shortened regular season this Friday against Mason  City (2-2, 1-2).

“Another physical and well coached team,” Vespestad said. “We need to continue to get better.“

Ballard’s game against the Mohawks will start at 7:30 p.m. and be played at Gilbert High School in Gilbert.
