Bombers drop five-set thriller to Comets: Ashworth and Wilson combine for 25 kills in loss

ALLEMAN - The Ballard volleyball team fell just short against North Polk, falling to the Comets in five sets during a Raccoon River Conference rivalry match Sept. 29 at Alleman.

The match went back and forth. Ballard won the first set by a 25-19 score, dropped the second by a 25-21 margin and came back to pull off a 25-21 victory in the third.

North Polk responded with a 25-21 win of its own in set four. The Comets kept the momentum from that victory going into the rally match, prevailing by a 15-11 score to take the match.

Ballard had 48 kills on 16-percent efficiency to North Polk’s 56 kills on 15-percent efficiency. The Bombers averaged 18.2 digs per set to the Comets’ 19.4.

Ballard had a slight serving edge in the match. The Bombers served at 90.4-percent accuracy with nine aces compared to North Polk’s 87.5-percent accuracy and eight aces.

Ava Ashworth had 22 digs, 14 kills, two assists and a block and Carley Wilson 21 digs, 11 kills, three aces and an assist for Ballard in a losing effort. Natalie Maher chipped in eight kills, Brooklyn Baumgardner five kills and a block, Hailey Battani four kills and a dig and Cecilia Christensen one kill and dig apiece. 

Kayle Van Pelt finished with 22 assists, 12 digs, five kills and one dig at setter. Brynna Huen tallied 18 assists, 11 digs and one ace for the Bombers.

Molly Houge tacked on 19 digs and three aces in the back row. Riley Askelsen finished with three digs and two aces.

The loss put Ballard at 7-12 overall and 4-3 in the RRC. North Polk improved to 18-11 and 4-2 respectively.

Sydney Anderson had 15 kills and one block and Tiana Gehling 14 kills for North Polk. Hailey Steffen led the Comets in digs with 34 and Emily Byrd had 24 assists and four aces.
