Spartans sweep GMG for second conference win: C-M falls to North Tama

GARWIN - The Collins-Maxwell volleyball team pulled off an Iowa Star Conference South Division sweep of GMG Oct. 1.

The Spartans won the first set by a comfortable 25-17 margin then pulled off two close victories. They took the second set in a 26-24 battle then won a 25-22 decision in the third to complete the sweep and improve to 2-2 in the ISC South Division and 5-8 overall.

Collins-Maxwell averaged 12.3 kills per set on 12.1-percent efficiency. The Spartans were 70 of 74 serving with eight aces and they averaged 34.7 digs per set.

Elise Robertson had 18 digs, 15 kills and one block and an assist for Collins-Maxwell in the win. Reagan Franzen added 25 digs, 12 kills, three blocks and four aces and Brooke Christie 18 digs, six kills and two aces.

Kenzi Wierson chipped in 22 digs, 21 assists and one kill, block and ace apiece for Collins-Maxwell. Isabell Hill had five digs and three kills, Marissa Boege four assists and one block, Josephine Ross two digs and one ace and Sofie Wattonville 14 digs.

MAXWELL - Collins-Maxwell couldn’t overcome a sluggish start in a three-set home loss to North Tama Sept. 29.

The Spartans suffered 25-17 and 25-10 losses in the first two sets. They put up a great fight in the third set, but came up short by a 25-22 score to drop the match and fall to 1-2 in the Iowa Star Conference South Division and 4-8 overall.

Collins-Maxwell had 22 kills, but only a 4.1-percent kill-efficiency rate. North Tama finished with 40 kills on 22.1-percent efficiency.

The Spartans only had two aces on 82-percent accuracy serving the ball compared to North Tama’s 12 aces and 93-percent accuracy. Collins-Maxwell was kept busy defensively, averaging 30.7 digs per set.

Elise Robertson had 20 digs, nine kills and one ace and Reagan Franzen 18 digs, seven kills and one block for Collins-Maxwell. Kenzi Wierson finished with 11 digs and assists apiece plus one ace, Brooke Christie had 15 digs and three kills, Josephine Ross 11 digs, Isabell Hill three digs and one block, Sofie Wattonville eight digs and one assist and Marissa Boege six digs, three assists and two kills.

Jadyn Rausch led North Tama with 25 assists, 11 kills, nine digs and four aces. Abby Deboef chipped in 14 digs and 13 kills for the Redhawks.

MAXWELL - Collins-Maxwell celebrated senior night with a non-conference victory over Martensdale St. Marys in four sets Sept. 28.

The Spartans easily won the first two sets by scores of 25-16 and 25-13. The Blue Devils came back with a 25-18 win in the third set, but Collins-Maxwell rebounded to dominate the fourth by a 25-11 score to wrap up its second win in a row.

Collins-Maxwell averaged 9.5 kills per set on 16.1-percent efficiency. The Spartans also averaged 28.5 digs per set and totaled 10 aces in 88 serve attempts.

Kenzi Wierson had 23 assists, 10 digs, two kills and one ace and Elise Robertson 26 digs, 15 kills, two aces and one block for the Spartans. Reagan Franzen tacked on 28 digs, seven kills and two aces and Brooke Christie finished with 20 digs, eight kills and three aces.

Josephine Ross added 13 digs and one ace, Marissa Boege six digs and one assist, Joshlynn Clark nine digs and one assist and ace apiece, Isabell Hill five kills and two digs and Rachel Purdy one kill.
