MAXWELL - The Collins-Maxwell football team was unable to close things out against Iowa Valley in a 54-49 home loss to the Tigers Friday.

The Spartans gave up 28 unanswered points to end the game. They had built a 49-26 lead thanks to a great stretch over the second and third quarters.

“We just can't finish when we have a big lead,” Collins-Maxwell head coach Cory Crnkovich said. “It reminds me of the Colo-NESCO game all over again. We can't close the deal.”

Collins-Maxwell let a 17-point lead slip away in a 34-30 loss at Colo-NESCO earlier in the season.

Iowa Valley recovered two onside kicks during its big rally to end the game.

“We didn't read our keys defensively and they had short fields and scored quickly,” Crnkovich said. “Anytime adversity hits us we give up, even with that big of a  lead.”

Evan Kearney did most of the damage offensively for Iowa Valley in its big finish.

Kearney had a 55-yard touchdown run late in the third quarter then had scoring scampers of 21 and 22 yards to close out the game. Brody Hoyt added a 25-yard touchdown run for the Tigers’ first touchdown of the fourth quarter.

Collins-Maxwell had built its big lead after scoring all 49 of its points over the second and third quarters.

In the second quarter Rylee Scott had a 2-yard touchdown run, Brody Sampson returned a kickoff 57 yards to paydirt and Jace Huntrods found Luke Huntrods on a 7-yard touchdown pass. The third quarter saw Hunter Clair catch a 50-yard touchdown pass from Mason Markley and score on an 11-yard run, Caleb Dvorak snare a 19-yard scoring strike from Markley and Sampson bust loose a 30-yard scoring run.

Dvorak caught six passes for 111 yards and also made 3.5 tackles and intercepted two passes on defense. Kayden McKinney had 14 tackles one sack, Scott 13 tackles plus 4.5 stops behind the line and a sack, Luke Huntrods 11 tackles, Sampson 6.5 stops plus an interception and Mitchell Bienfang 5.5 tackles and a sack for Collins-Maxwell.

Clair finished with 55 yards receiving and nine rushing, Luke Huntrods made five grabs for 49 yards, Smith had 40 yards receiving and 36 rushing and Sampson ran for 40 yards on just three carries on offense for the Spartans. Markley completed 17 of 33 passes for 248 yards with two touchdowns and an interception.

Dane Beattie made all seven of his extra-point attempts and Clair averaged 40.5 yards on four punts.

The loss put Collins-Maxwell at 3-3 both overall and in the district. Iowa Valley improved to 3-3 overall and 3-2 in the district.

Kearney had 139 yards rushing and 65 passing, Evan Reuter 96 yards and a touchdown rushing and Brody Ward 82 yards and two scores on the ground for the Tigers. Pierce Kienitz had 11.5 tackles and two fumble recoveries and Hoyt 13 tackles to pace Iowa Valley on defense.

Collins-Maxwell will close out the regular season this Friday with a non-district game at English Valleys (5-1).

“We have to get back to work,” Crnkovich said. “Our goal this week is to go 1-0 and finish the regular season with a winning record. Then get prepared for the playoffs.”

The Spartans game against the Bears will take place at 7 p.m. in North English.
