Spartans best Bolts with big second half, 39-22: C-M ends game on 25-0 run
COLLINS - A huge second-half rally gave the Collins-Maxwell football team a 39-22 victory over rival Baxter in the Spartans home opener Friday.
Collins-Maxwell outscored Baxter 33-8 over the final two quarters to improve to 2-0 on the season.
“Thank the lord there are two halves in a game,” Collins-Maxwell head coach Cory Crnkovich said. “We struggled with penalties in the first half. We didn't protect the ball. We just made a ton of mental mistakes. The second half we didn't make those.”
The Spartans ended the game on a 25-0 run. Quarterback Mason Markley scored on two short touchdown runs with a 40-yard touchdown pass to Caleb Dvorak in between and Rylee Scott finished things off with a 1-yard touchdown run.
“Our keys in the second half were very simple,” Collins-Maxwell head coach Cory Crnkovich said. “Don't turn the ball over and find No. 1 (Baxter receiver Rory Heer).”
Heer burned Collins-Maxwell with six catches for 106 yards and a touchdown. But the Spartans kept him in check in the second half.
Collins-Maxwell turned the ball over four times, but also forced three Baxter miscues. The Spartans outgained the Bolts, 368-230 in total yards.
Luke Huntrods spearheaded Collins-Maxwell’s dominant second half on defense. He ended the game with 13.5 tackles and three sacks.
A.J. Smith had three tackles and two interceptions for the Spartans. Weston Kahler finished with five tackles and an interception, Dvorak 7.5 stops and Scott seven tackles.
“Defense played a heck of a game,” Crnkovich said. “Two big plays and that was it.
On offense Markley completed 15 of 29 passes for 205 yards and two touchdowns with four interceptions to go along with his two rushing touchdowns. Dvorak made eight grabs for 124 yards and two scores, Jace Huntrods had 70 yards rushing and 36 receiving, Smith ran for 65 yards and Kahler made three grabs for 41 yards.
Baxter fell to 0-2. Cody Damman threw for 113 yards and a touchdown and ran for 52 yards and another score and Kael Johnston returned an interception for a touchdown for the Bolts.
This week Collins-Maxwell will face Colo-NESCO (1-1) on the road in an attempt to stay perfect on the season. Last year the Spartans won an exciting 52-43 battle over the Royals in Maxwell.
“We are going to keep that ‘grind it out’ mentality,” Crnkovich said. “We are still hungry. Game plan this week, fix our mistakes and compete on every play Friday night.”
The Spartans and Royals will kick off at 7 p.m. Friday in Colo.
