MAXWELL — The big-play tandem of Kadin Bennett and Brett Livesay sparked the Collins-Maxwell football team to a 44-8 rout of Murray for its first victory of the season Friday in its home opener.

Bennett threw for 271 yards and five touchdowns — all to Livesay, who made 10 grabs for 202 yards.

“Those two worked their tails off this offseason,” Collins-Maxwell head coach Cory Crnkovich said. “They went to every 5-on-5 we had, every camp we had and made it to lifting a lot. Those two kids wanted to get better from last year. They both saw how we could improve on some of the little things in our releases and route running process. They studied that along with putting in the extra effort in the offseason. So far it’s paying off.”

The Spartan defense also came up big, limiting Murray to 239 total yards and forcing three turnovers.

“We limited the big plays,” Crnkovich said. “We stuck to our keys that we preached all week. (Cole) Billerbeck had a great game plan and they executed it very well.”

Collins-Maxwell led 16-0 at the half after Bennett had a 3-yard touchdown run and found Livesay on a 33-yard scoring pass in the first quarter. Bennett connected with Livesay for touchdown passes of 19, 43 and 33 yards in the third quarter to up the Spartan lead to 36-0.

“We had some hiccups in the first half offensively, mental mistakes cost us on the scoreboard,” Crnkovich said. “Defense did their job and we didn’t hold out on our (offensive) end. The second half we made some adjustments and we started to play as one.”

Bennett hit Livesay for six one more time in the fourth quarter — the third score that went went for 33 yards.

Murray’s only touchdown came later in the fourth quarter.

“I’m extremely proud of this group of guys,” Crnkovich said. “Our goal Friday was to pick up our first win of the season along with our first home-opener win in our programs history, and they achieved that goal. Now on to AGWSR to get win two.”

In addition to his passing, Bennett also ran for 41 yards. A.J. Smith picked up 45 yards rushing and 18 receiving for Collins-Maxwell.

Simon McKinney made a 29-yard reception, Rylee Scott had a 28-yard run and Weston Kahler made two grabs for 12 yards.

Luke Huntrods made 9.5 tackles, Simon McKinney 8.5, Kahler and Bennett eight apiece, Livesay 7.5 and Kayden McKinney six for Collins-Maxwell on defense. Simon McKinney, Scott and Austin Snoody each recovered a fumble and Kaiden Martin chipped in four tackles and a sack.

Colton Siefkas threw for 49 yards and ran for a touchdown, Chance Lecy picked up 88 yards on the ground and Zack Belden added 51 yards rushing for Murray. The Mustangs fell to 0-2.

Collins-Maxwell will take a 1-2 record into Friday’s game against AGWSR (1-1) to open 8-man District 5 play. The game is set to start at 7 p.m. in Ackley.
