Spartans give Mustangs a scare

NEWELL — The Collins-Maxwell football team put a big scare into Newell-Fonda Friday, but the Spartans couldn’t withstand a second-half surge by the Mustangs in a 52-44 loss.

Behind a strong passing attack, Collins-Maxwell jumped out to a 12-0 lead. The Spartans maintained a 32-26 lead at the half.

But Newell-Fonda outclassed Collins-Maxwell in the second half. The Mustangs pulled even at 38-38 on a 35-yard touchdown run by Trey Jungers late in the third quarter.

Collins-Maxwell’s Brett Livesay blocked the extra point to keep the score tied. But it couldn’t slow the momentum.

Jungers added a pair of 2-yard touchdown runs in the fourth quarter to give Newell-Fonda a 52-38 lead. Collins-Maxwell fought back with a touchdown drive to pull within 52-44 after Kadin Bennett found Livesay on a 2-yard scoring pass.

The Spartans attempted an on-side kick, but Newell-Fonda recovered to sew up the victory.

The loss put Collins-Maxwell at 0-2. But the Spartans gave a tremendous effort against a 2018 playoff qualifier.

Bennett and Livesay formed an unstoppable combination for Collins-Maxwell on offense.

Bennett completed 16 of 32 passes for 345 yards and seven touchdowns and he also ran for 50 yards. Livesay caught 11 balls for 216 yards and five scores.

Wes Kahler also came up big at receiver. Kahler hauled in two long touchdown receptions in the first quarter to get Collins-Maxwell out to its early lead, and he finished with six catches for 122 yards.

A.J. Smith ran for 45 yards on 10 carries, Mason Markley completed 2 of 6 passes for 13 yards and Hunter Clair made one grab for 20 yards for Collins-Maxwell.

On defense Livesay made 11.5 tackles, Bennett 9.5, Rylee Scott nine, Simon McKinney 8.5 and Kayden McKinney eight. Kayden also had two tackles for loss and a sack, Livesay made one sack and Simon McKinney and Scott each recovered a fumble.

Newell-Fonda (1-0) hurt Collins-Maxwell on the ground. The Mustangs picked up 385 yards rushing on 58 attempts.

Hunter Christiansen ran for 199 yards, Jungers tallied 67 yards and four touchdowns and Gabe Sievers finished with 53 yards and one score on the ground. Sievers also completed 3 of 4 passes for 88 yards and two touchdowns and Aden Mahler made two grabs for 76 yards and a score.

Mahler and Will Pitstick each intercepted a pass, Carter Schachtner had a sack and Alex Spangler picked up 7.5 tackles for Newell-Fonda on defense.

Up next for Collins-Maxwell is its first home game of the season. The Spartans host Murray (0-1) at 7 p.m. this Friday in Maxwell.
