Ballard wins twice at Centennial duals
ANKENY — The Ballard wrestling team placed sixth at the Ankeny Centennial Duals Saturday in Ankeny.
The Bombers posted a 2-3 dual record on the day to put their season mark at 3-7.
Ballard lost to Dowling Catholic (46-27) and Dubuque Hempstead (51-20) in its first two duals. The Bombers came back to defeat Oskaloosa (55-22) and Prairie City-Monroe (42-34) before falling to Dallas Center-Grimes (41-34) in the fifth-place dual.
In the loss to Dowling Catholic, the Bombers received falls from Alex Bangs, Skyler Noftsger and Jim Chism. Bangs defeated the Maroons’ Max Derry in 32 seconds at 145 pounds, Noftsger stuck Zach Schwager in 1:31 at 160 and Chism pinned Dannon Bitting in 1:08 at 170.
Gage Long won by a 6-0 decision over Dowling Catholic’s Brady McMahon at 132. Sam Andrews received a forfeit at 220.
Noftsger and Mason Askelsen (182) both picked up falls in the loss to Dubuque Hempstead. Noftsger downed Trevor Maiers in 1:06 and Askelsen took care of Andrew Hefel in 1:45.
Reece Broer won by technical fall, 16-1, over Hempstead’s Gabe Brooks at 120. Tim Lang won a 4-3 battle for the Bombers over Colton Kinsella at 126.
Ballard six falls, one win by major decision and one by decision in the victory over Oskaloosa.
Broer downed Blade VanderBeek in 1:24, Lang defeated Salvador Gonzalez in 3:10, Long whipped Zack Beebe in 3:38, Noftsger trounced Cody Gunn in 49 seconds, Chism stuck Iasih Haywood and Askelsen pinned Will Campbell in 48 seconds. Gavin Estabrooks picked up a 12-1 major decision over Oskaloosa’s Aden Scott at 138, Andrews pulled off a 7-0 decision over Emmit Boender and Chris Lee received a forfeit at 113.
In the victory over PCM, the Bombers recorded five pins and a forfeit. Skyler Noftsger also delivered the biggest win of the day by defeating the Mustangs’ Wes Cummings in a battle between the top two wrestlers at 160 in Class 2A, according to The Predicament.
Noftsger, ranked No. 2, laid claim to the No. 1 ranking by scoring an impressive 12-5 victory over Cummings.
Lee pinned PCM’s Trey Thomas in 49 seconds, Broer stuck Grant Uitermarkt in 56 seconds, Long downed Clay VanWyk in 1:11, Askelsen whipped Kinser Sloan in 20 seconds and Andrews stuck Seith Greiner in 1:55. Estabrooks added an 8-2 win over Kaleb Ives and Elijah Moore (106) received a forfeit.
Ballard picked up five pins and a win by major decision in the loss to DCG.
Broer took care of DCG’s Riley Kovaleski in 40 seconds, Long disposed of Trevon Wells in 4:59, Wyatt Borg defeated Spencer Hall in 1:30 at 152, Chism ousted Connor Pertzsch in 1:06 and Andrews pinned Colin Kakacek in 2:51. Bangs took down the Mustangs’ Cole Smith by a 15-2 major decision.
Ankeny Centennial defeated Dowling Catholic in the championship dual, 46-21, to win the tournament.
INDIANOLA — Ballard came up short in three competitive duals at a quadrangular meet in Indianola Dec. 6.
The Bombers lost to Indianola, Webster City and Dallas Center-Grimes, falling to 1-4 in dual competition on the season. The Bombers were hurt by having to forfeit six points at 113 pounds each dual.
Ballard fell to Indianola by a 40-28 score. Skyler Noftsger, ranked No. 1 in Class 2A at 160, pinned the Indians’ Hunter VanderWaal in 38 seconds, Tim Lang stuck Indianola’s Trey Kellow in 1:12 at 126, Gage Long defeated Brock Elbert in 1:41 at 132 and Sam Andrews scored a fall in 1:01 over Wes Hogard at 220.
Reese Broer won by major decision, 9-0, over Indianola’s Trey Kaas at 120. Rylee Davidson (285), Mason Askelsen (182), Jim Chism (170) and Gavin Estabrooks (138) all lost competitive matches by decision for Ballard against Indianola.
In the loss to Webster City, one point was deducted from the Bombers’ score for unsportsmanlike conduct. They finished with four pins, one technical fall and two wins by decision.
Noftsger stuck Webster City’s Carter Bedford in 1:42, Long downed Brady Auderer in 3:29, Jack Chism pinned Hunter Collicott in 5:23 at 195 and Davidson whipped Malachi Montes in 5:10 at 285. Alex Bangs scored a 16-0 technical fall over the Lynx’ Daltyn Peck at 145.
Jim Chism delivered a 7-2 victory over Webster City’s Alex Wolfgram at 170 and Askelsen won a 4-2 battle over the Lynx’ Michael Gilbert at 182. Gavin Estabrooks dropped a competitive 13-9 decision to Webster City’s Nick Gasca at 138.
Broer, Wyatt Borg (152), Noftsger, Andrews and Davidson all won by fall for Ballard against DCG. Broer defeated the Mustangs’ Riley Kovaleski in five minutes flat, Borg downed Spencer Hall in 1:10, Noftsger whipped Bain Broderick in 51 seconds, Andrews stuck Blake Willey in 1:17 and Davidson pinned Grant Waymire in 3:12.
Bangs tacked on an 8-3 victory over DCG’s Cole Smith. Jack Chism put up a good fight against the Mustangs’ Brody Burgher before suffering a 10-7 setback.
