Ballard girls upset No. 7 Boone

HUXLEY — A huge second half lifted the Ballard girls’ basketball team to an impressive 54-40 upset win over Boone Friday at Huxley.

The Bombers outscored the No. 7 team in Class 4A 34-17 over the final two quarters to pull off the big win and improve to 4-1 overall and 1-1 in the Raccoon River Conference.

Ballard jumped out to an early lead, only to see Boone surge in front at the half, 23-20. In the third quarter the Bombers got hot, outpacing their entire first-half scoring production to take charge, and Boone never recovered.

Ballard shot 45 percent from the field, got to the line 20 times and forced 16 turnovers. The Bombers took good care of the ball, only committing 10 miscues of their own.

Josie Fleischmann scored 14 points and had three steals for Ballard in the victory. Brooke Loewe canned three 3-pointers and finished with 11 points, four rebounds and four assists.

Maggie Larson also scored in double figures with 10 points and she added four rebounds. Meg Rietz had seven points; Molly Ihle four points, five assists and four rebounds and Cassidy Thompson four points, six rebounds and two blocks for the Bombers.

Boone fell to 4-1 overall and 1-1 in the conference. Emma Dighton had 12 points, Emmy Lewis 11, Zoey Hightshoe eight and Madyln Danner seven for the Toreadors.

HUXLEY — Ballard used strong outside shooting and an aggressive defense to outlast Pella in an exciting 56-53 affair Dec. 4 at Huxley.

Ballard was leading 54-53 with 3.5 seconds left when Pella missed the front end of a 1-and-1 free-throw opportunity. The Bombers got the rebound and point guard Molly Ihle was fouled with less than a second remaining.

Ihle drained both foul shots to ice the game as Ballard improved to 3-1 on the season.

The game was a sloppy affair that saw the two teams combine for 60 turnovers. Ballard forced 33 miscues, coming up with 19 steals.

The Bombers also made 8 of 19 3-pointers to Pella’s 4 of 15 showing from long range. That helped Ballard overcome a 37-28 rebounding deficit.

Brooke Loewe hit three 3-pointers and finished with 18 points, seven steals and four assists for Ballard in the win. Josie Fleischmann canned four shots from downtown and totaled 16 points, three assists and two steals.

Ihle added 11 points, six rebounds, five steals and three assists. Cassidy Thompson had seven points, five rebounds and three blocks inside and Maggie Larson chipped in three points, five rebounds, three assists and three steals.

Emily Holterhaus paced Pella with 11 points and nine rebounds. Madison Naig scored 10 points, Grace Held nine and Madison Parks eight for the Little Dutch, who dropped to 1-3.
