Collins-Maxwell boys cruise past Colo-NESCO in season opener

JANESVILLE - The Collins-Maxwell boys’ basketball team struggled on both ends of the floor in the first half against Janesville en route to a 51-29 loss to the Wildcats Saturday at Janesville.

Collins-Maxwell only scored two points in the first quarter and gave up 20 in the second. At the half, the Spartans were down by an insurmountable 33-12 margin.

The second half saw Collins-Maxwell put up a much better fight. The Spartans limited the Wildcats to 18 points and were only outscored by one point over the final two quarters.

Collins-Maxwell fell to 1-2 with the loss. Brett Livesay had a strong performance in defeat, finishing with 16 points, 10 rebounds and one block.

Mason Markley, Ben Hofer and Nathan Leonard added four points apiece for the Spartans. Leonard also had five rebounds, three assists and a steal.

TAMA - Collins-Maxwell was overpowered during the middle two quarters in a 65-30 loss to Meskwaki Friday at Tama.

The Spartans were outscored 45-13 over the second and third quarters, falling to 1-1 both overall and in the Iowa Star Conference South Division.

Collins-Maxwell did finish the game strong, outscoring the Warriors 13-8 in the fourth quarter.

The Spartans were hurt by sloppy ball handling as Meskwaki ended the game with 19 steals.

Brett Livesay turned in a big game in defeat for Collins-Maxwell.

Livesay posted a double-double with 18 points and 11 rebounds and he also blocked one shot.

Ben Hofer had four points and two steals and John Kasper four points, one assist and one steal for the Spartans. Nathan Leonard and Weston Kahler chipped in two points apiece.

Tate Bear led Meskwaki with a game-high 25 points. He added seven rebounds and three steals.

MAXWELL - Collins-Maxwell is showing signs of a program on the rise after opening the season with a 47-35 victory over Colo-NESCO Nov. 27 at Maxwell.

The Spartans won only two games in its first season as a program last winter. They are well on their way to surpassing that total after outscoring Colo-NESCO 17-5 in the fourth quarter to break open the game after the two squads were deadlocked at 30-30 entering the final period.

Collins-Maxwell held Colo-NESCO to 13 of 46 shooting from the field. The Spartans also posted a 38-30 rebounding advantage.

Brett Livesay had 21 points and 13 rebounds and Mason Markley drained four 3-pointers and finished with 12 points for Collins-Maxwell.

Nathan Leonard added three points, 10 rebounds, four assists and three blocks and John Kasper chipped in seven points, four assists and two steals.

Kelly Gray led Colo-NESCO with 14 points and four assists and steals apiece.

Francis Bower tacked on 10 points and eight rebounds and Brighton Clatt eight points, six boards and two steals.
