Bombers down Ankeny at Ankeny Tournament
ANKENY - The Ballard softball team went 1-3 going up against four larger schools at the Ankeny Tournament, held Friday and Saturday at Ankeny.
The Bombers, ranked No. 13 in Class 4A, knocked off an Ankeny team rated No. 8 in 5A on Saturday. Ballard suffered losses to Bishop Heelan and Dowling Catholic on Friday and Ankeny Centennial on Saturday, going to 15-12 on the season.
In the victory over Ankeny, the Bombers built an 8-1 lead and withstood a four-run Hawk fifth to pull off an 8-5 win in a shortened five-inning game. Ballard totaled 11 hits and pitchers Matty Beerbower and Isabell Hobbs held Ankeny to seven.
Molly Houge was 2-for-3 with a double, run and three RBIs; Isabella Johnson went 2-for-3 with three runs and a steal; Abby Husak finished 2-for-3 and Rachel Newell singled and drove in two runs for the Bombers. Maggie Larson singled and scored twice; Karlee Ahrenholtz was 1-for-2 with a run and an RBI; Carley Wilson singled and drove in a run; Beerbower singled; Rory Olson scored and stole a base and Hobbs drew a walk.
Beerbower got the win after giving up four runs — three earned — on four hits and walks apiece with three strikeouts in 3 ⅔ innings. Hobbs gave up one run on three hits and two walks in 1 ⅓ innings.
Marina Carter was 2-for-2 with a double and an RBI and Peyton Daugherty 2-for-3 with a triple and a run for Ankeny. Paige Jacobsen gave up four runs with one walk in 1 ⅓ innings as the losing Hawk pitcher.
In its other game on Saturday, Ballard suffered a 9-1 loss at the hands of Ankeny Centennial in a game that was also limited to five innings. The Bombers were held to one hit by Jaguar hurler Haley Gatica.
Houge singled and stole a base, Husak and Hobbs both walked once, Olson picked up a steal and Larson scored the lone run for Ballard. Beerbower took the loss after giving up three runs on four hits and two walks in two innings.
Hobbs surrendered six runs — five earned — on five hits and two walks in 1 ⅓ innings and Maggie McCrady threw 1 ⅔ scoreless innings with two walks for Ballard.
Gatica struck out three and walked two in five innings. Franie Burnett homered and drove in four runs and Cassi Garland belted a solo homer for Centennial.
On Friday, Ballard suffered two one-run losses. The Bombers were dealt a 4-3 loss by Bishop Heelan and a 3-2 setback at the hands of Dowling Catholic.
Ballard had six hits in the loss to Bishop Heelan. The Bombers took a 3-1 lead after scoring once in the second and twice in the fourth, but the Crusaders plated three runs in the fifth and held Ballard scoreless over the final three innings.
Ahrenholtz went 2-for-3 with a double and two RBIs; Maggie Larson was 1-for-2 with a walk, two runs and an RBI; Hobbs doubled and scored; Johnson and Beerbower both singled and Newell walked and stole a base against Bishop Heelan. Beerbower took the loss after going the distance and giving up four runs on five hits and two walks with nine strikeouts.
The Bombers fell behind 2-0 after one inning in the loss to Dowling Catholic and couldn’t recover. Both teams scored a run in the fifth and Ballard added a run in the sixth, but failed to push another run across as the game ended after the sixth.
Johnson went 2-for-3 with a double and an RBI; Husak doubled, scored and stole a base; Newell doubled and Beerbower singled against the Maroons. Allison Vetter walked, stole a base and scored; Hobbs and Ahrenholtz both walked once and Wilson picked up a steal.
Hobbs took the loss after allowing three runs — two earned — on seven hits and three walks with two strikeouts going all six innings. Annie Thomas gave up two runs — one earned — with three walks and two strikeouts as the winning Maroon pitcher.
Bri Rodriguez singled and drove in two runs and Ella McVey doubled, walked, stole two bases and scored twice for Dowling Catholic.

CARLISLE - Ballard was hurt by one bad inning against Carlisle June 20, suffering a 4-2 loss in a battle of ranked Raccoon River Conference teams at Carlisle.
Ballard, ranked No. 13 in Class 4A, took a 2-0 lead into the bottom of the sixth inning, only to see No. 2 Carlisle score all four of its runs in the inning. The Bombers were unable to counter in the top of the seventh to end the game and fall to 5-2 in the RRC.
Ballard scored both of its runs in the second inning, courtesy of a Maggie Larson home run. Isabell Hobbs singled, walked twice and scored; Matty Beerbower was 2-for-3 and Abby Husak singled for the Bombers.
Beerbower took the loss. She was hurt by defensive mistakes as every Carlisle run was unearned.
Beerbower gave up six hits and five walks and she struck out three in seven innings.
Molly Hoekstra struck out eight and walked two in seven innings as the winning Carlisle pitcher. Kennedy Preston was 2-for-3 with a double, run and two RBIs and Delaney Schnathorst 2-for-3 with a run and two steals for the Wildcats on offense.

BOONE - A huge fifth inning helped Ballard rally past Boone for an exciting 9-8 Raccoon River Conference victory June 18 at Boone.
Ballard trailed 5-0 going into the fifth. The Bombers scored six times in the fifth, then tacked on three more scores in the top of the sixth to surge ahead by four runs.
Boone came back with three runs in the bottom of the sixth to get right back in the game. But Bomber hurler Matty Beerbower blanked the Toreadors in the seventh to finish off the win for her team.
Beerbower gave up seven earned runs on 11 hits, going all seven innings. She struck out five and walked only one.
At the plate Beerbower was 3-for-4 with a triple and two RBIs. Isabell Hobbs went 2-for-4 with a run, steal and three RBIs; Abby Husak finished 2-for-4 with two runs and an RBI and Rachel Newell ended up 1-for-4 with a walk steal and two runs.
Karlee Ahrenholtz finished 1-for-3 with a walk, run and two RBIs and Isabella Johnson and Molly Houge were both 1-for-4 with a run. Maggie Larson also scored a run for the Bombers.
Emma Dighton was 3-for-4 with a double, homer, two runs and four RBIs and Kinsie Zinnel finished 3-for-4 with a triple, two runs and an RBI to pace Boone offensively. Emily Ades was the losing Toreador pitcher after surrendering six runs on two walks and a strikeout in 4 ⅔ innings.
