Comets win three of four at Kiwanis Invite
ROLAND - The North Polk softball team had a successful two days at the Kiwanis Invitational in Roland, going 3-1 on Friday and Saturday.
The Comets, ranked sixth in Class 3A, whipped Mount Vernon and Perry on Friday by scores of 9-2 and 7-3. On Saturday, North Polk trounced Ames, 10-0, then let one get away against Boone with a 5-4 setback to the 4A school.
North Polk’s season record moved to 13-5 at the conclusion of the tournament.
On Friday, North Polk defeated Mount Vernon in six innings. The Comets connected on an impressive 18 hits, scoring three times apiece in the third, fourth and fifth innings.
Trisha Sporra was 3-for-3 with three runs and steals apiece, plus a walk and an RBI and Ellie Owen, Sydney Albaugh, Sydney Anderson, Hailey Steffen, Sophie Swygman, Paige Sandberg and Rebecca Ley each tallied two hits for the Comets. Owen doubled and scored; Albaugh doubled, scored, stole a base and drove in three runs; Anderson scored twice, stole three bases and knocked in a run; Steffen drove in two runs and stole a base; Swygman hit a solo home run and Ley doubled, scored and stole two bases.
Swygman was the winning pitcher. She gave up two earned runs on five hits with five strikeouts and no walks. Amanda Roe surrendered seven earned runs with two walks in five innings as the losing pitcher for Mount Vernon.
The Comets went off for 14 hits in the win over Perry. North Polk outscored the Bluejays 4-0 over the final five innings to pull off the win.
Hannah Pals was 4-for-4 with a double, run, steal and two RBIs; Steffen doubled twice and scored three runs; Sporra was 2-for-5 with a triple, steal and two RBIs and Ley finished 2-for-4 with a steal, run and RBI for North Polk against Perry. Owen singled, stole a base and scored twice; Sandberg went 1-for-4 with an RBI and a steal; Swygman singled and stole a base and Noelle Hoffman added a hit.
Swygman picked up the win again after tossing five scoreless innings with four strikeouts. Hougham allowed three runs — two earned — on three hits and two walks in two innings.
Alyssa Kruger went all seven innings for Perry and allowed five earned runs with five strikeouts and a walk in a losing effort. Johanna Diw led the Bluejays offensively by finishing 2-for-4 with a double and two RBIs.
Saturday saw North Polk dismantle Ames in five innings. The Comets had nine hits, scoring a run in the second, three in the third, four in the fourth and two in the fifth.
Owen went 2-for-4 with a triple, run, steal and four RBIs and Ley finished 2-for-3 with a double, two runs and an RBI against the Little Cyclones. Sporra singled, walked, stole a base and scored twice; Anderson was 1-for-2 with a run, walk and three RBIs; Albaugh doubled, stole a base, scored and knocked in a run; Swygman singled, walked and scored and Pals ended up 1-for-3 with an RBI and a steal.
Hougham was the victorious pitcher, hurling a three-hitter with three strikeouts and no walks.
Jewels Buss allowed six earned runs with three walks in three innings as the losing pitcher for Ames. Karlie Hill picked up two hits for the Little Cyclones.
North Polk couldn’t finish the job against Boone in its other game on Saturday.
The Comets took a 4-2 lead into the seventh, only to see the Toreadors plate three runs in the top of the seventh. North Polk was unable to answer in the bottom of the inning, suffering its fifth loss of the season.
Anderson was was 2-for-3 with a double, walk and RBI and Albaugh finished 2-for-4 with a run to pace North Polk’s seven-hit attack against Boone. Hougham went 1-for-3 with two RBIs, Ley singled and drove in two runs and Hoffman picked up a single.
Pals also scored twice and Swygman drew two walks versus the Toreadors.
Swygman was the losing pitcher after giving up five runs — three earned — on seven hits with seven strikeouts and no walks in 6 ⅓ innings. Pals threw the other ⅔ of an inning and didn’t allow a hit or a walk.
Emily Ades went the distance and overcame four walks to earn the win for Boone. Caitlynne Shadle doubled twice, scored a run and picked up two RBIs for the Toreadors on offense.

GILBERT - North Polk used a quality start and great pitching to down Gilbert in Heart of Iowa Conference play, 4-1, June 13 at Gilbert.
The Comets scored three runs over the first two innings and coasted to victory behind the arm of Sophie Swygman.The win put North Polk at 6-2 in the HOIC.
Swygman fired a two-hitter with six strikeouts and one walk over seven innings to earn the victory. North Polk gave her six hits and came up with seven steals in offensive support.
Ellie Owen, Trisha Sporra, Sydney Albaugh, Hailey Steffen, Bailey Hougham and Rebecca Ley each singled once for North Polk. Owen also walked and scored; Sporra stole a base; Albaugh picked up a run, steal and RBI apiece; Steffen swiped two bases; Hougham knocked in a run and Ley stole two bases, scored and drove in a run.
Jordyn Pike walked two and struck out one in seven innings as the losing Gilbert pitcher. Nessa Johnson doubled and scored for the Tigers offensively.

ALLEMAN - North Polk used three strong innings on offense to overpower Prairie City-Monroe by an 11-1 score in six innings June 11 at Alleman.
The Comets came up big every other inning to earn a decisive Heart of Iowa Conference victory. North Polk scored four times in both the second and fourth frames and posted three runs in the sixth, finishing the game with eight hits and seven steals.
Sydney Anderson was 2-for-3 with a double, walk, two steals and two RBIs and Chloe Dougherty went 2-for-3 with a run, steal and RBI apiece to lead the Comets. Ellie Owen was 1-for-2 with a walk, steal and two runs and RBIs apiece; Sydney Albaugh doubled and drove in two runs; Rebecca Ley went 1-for-1 with two RBIs and Paige Sandberg singled, walked two times, drove in a run and scored twice.
Trisha Sporra scored two times and stole a base and Courtney Wiseman and Emily Olson each crossed the plate once for the Comets.
Sophie Swygman earned the win on the mound after allowing one unearned run on six hits with seven strikeouts and no walks, going all six innings.
