Ballard splits four at Fort Dodge
FORT DODGE - The Ballard softball team split four games against quality competition from Class 5A schools at the Fort Dodge Tournament Friday and Saturday in Fort Dodge.
On Friday the Bombers, ranked No. 14 in 4A, defeated Sioux City East by an 8-4 score in six innings and suffered a 16-2 setback to No. 11 Ankeny in three frames.
Ballard (13-8) jumped out to a 7-2 lead against Sioux City East. The Bombers led 4-0 after one inning and countered Sioux City East’s two-run second with three runs in the third to coast to victory.
Isabella Johnson finished 3-for-3 with a steal and three RBIs, Karlee Ahrenholtz was 2-for-3 with a run and an RBI, Rachel Newell wound up 2-for-4 with a double and a run and Abby Husak went 2-for-2 with a run and a steal for Ballard offensively. Isabell Hobbs doubled, stole a base, drove in a run and scored twice; Molly Houge singled; Maggie Larson delivered two walks, steals and runs apiece; Matty Beerbower knocked in a run and Rory Olson scored once.
Beerbower was the winning pitcher. She allowed two runs on two hits and walks apiece with a strikeout in two innings.
Hobbs surrendered two runs — one earned — on four hits and a walk with three strikeouts in four innings for the Bombers.
Ballard was overwhelmed by Ankeny’s 14-run second inning. The game was tied at 2-2 going into the second.
Hobbs was 2-for-2 with a triple and a run, Beerbower singled and drove in a run, Abby Husak singled once and Larson stole a base and scored for Ballard. Beerbower gave up 10 earned runs on eight hits and four walks in 1 ⅓ innings as the losing pitcher and Hobbs surrendered five unearned runs on six hits in ⅔ of an inning.
Saturday’s competition saw Ballard knock off Dowling Catholic, 8-7, in a shortened five-inning affair due to time. The Bombers also were dealt a 9-2 loss to Muscatine in five innings.
Ballard had two four-run innings to Dowling Catholic’s one and that made the difference in the Bombers’ win over the Maroons. Ballard took an 8-3 lead after four innings, then withstood Dowling Catholic’s four-run fifth to get the victory.
Beerbower surrendered seven earned runs on seven hits and six walks with two strikeouts, going all five innings to get the win. She also went 2-for-2 with two RBIs at the plate.
Husak finished 2-for-2 with a steal and two runs and RBIs apiece and Johnson went 2-for-3 with a run, steal and RBI for Ballard. Hobbs and Larson both singled, scored and drove in a run and Larson also walked once.
Ballard scored twice in the top of the first inning, then went silent offensively in the loss to Muscatine. Muscatine plated four runs in both the first and third innings and one in the fourth.
Hobbs was 1-for-3 with two RBIs, Husak doubled and scored, Newell singled and scored and Beerbower, Ahrenholtz and Brynna Huen each singled once for Ballard on offense.
Beerbower allowed seven runs — six earned — on six hits and three walks in 2 ⅓ inning as the losing pitcher versus Muscatine. Hobbs gave up two runs on five hits in 1 ⅓ innings and Maggie McCrady tossed ⅓ of an inning, surrendering one hit.

HUXLEY - Ballard used a big third inning to take charge en route to an 11-1 victory over Carroll in five innings June 12 at Gary Telford Field.
The Bombers pushed six runs across in the bottom of the third to build a 7-0 lead. They added two runs in each of the next two innings to prematurely end the game and improve to 4-1 in the Raccoon River Conference.
Maggie Larson went 3-for-3 with a double, three runs and an RBI and Isabell Hobbs was 3-for-4 with two runs and three RBIs to lead Ballard’s 13-hit attack offensively. Karlee Ahrenholtz was 2-for-3 with a steal and two RBIs, Abby Husak 2-for-4 with two runs, Rachel Newell 1-for-2 with a steal and two runs and Matty Beerbower 1-for-2 with a walk and two RBIs.
Carley Wilson singled and scored, Allison Vetter stole a base and scored and Rory Olson and Britten Walther both swiped one base for the Bombers.
Beerbower gave up one earned run on six hits with six strikeouts and no walks, going all five innings.
