Comets’ Bonewitz, Monk named to IGCA’s all-state soccer team

North Polk senior midfielder Danielle Bonewitz and freshman defender Maya Monk received all-state honors in girls’ soccer by the Iowa Girls Coaches Association in 2018.

Bonewitz was named to the IGCA first team in 1A. She used her powerful leg to lead the Comets in scoring with 19 goals; she also handed out six assists and played tough defense.

Bonewitz was joined on the 1A first team by Davenport Assumption’s Molly Gervase, Carly King and Bridget Poster; Council Bluffs St. Albert’s Ellerie Tarbox; Columbus Catholic’s Ana Ortiz; Center Point-Urbana’s Raegan Dufoe; Des Moines Christian’s Angela Kinzie Nevada’s Grace Francis; Bondurant-Farrar’s Emma De Costa; Gilbert’s Eva Steckelberg and Tri-Center’s Tillie Heim.

Monk landed on the 1A second team. She was one of the top freshman defenders in the state, helping North Polk record 11 shutouts.

Assumption’s Elizabeth Maus was named 1A Coach of the Year by the IGCA after leading the Knights to their third-consecutive state title.
