Collins-Maxwell continues its red-hot start

COLLINS - The Collins-Maxwell softball team made short work of Dunkerton Monday, crushing the Raiders by a 13-1 score in four innings at Collins.

The Spartans, ranked No. 3 in Class 1A, scored twice in the first inning, three times in the second and four runs apiece in the third and fourth frames to end the game early and improve to 9-0 overall and 7-0 in the Iowa Star Conference.

Collins-Maxwell finished with 13 hits and they also had six steals.

Alexis Houge had a huge game leading off for Collins-Maxwell. Houge went a perfect 4-for-4 with a double, triple, two steals, three runs and six RBIs.

Emma Kahler was 3-for-3 with three runs and an RBI and Mikayla Houge 2-for-3 with a double and two RBIs. Reagan Franzen went 1-for-2 with a walk, steal, run and RBI; Katie Camp was 1-for-2 with a run and an RBI; Brailyn Tankersly singled, walked and drove in a run; Olivia Pasquariello walked two times and scored twice and Ella Kahler walked twice and scored once.

Mikayla Houge was the winning pitcher. Houge fired a no-hitter, giving up one unearned run on one walk with seven strikeouts in four innings.

JANESVILLE - Collins-Maxwell survived a scare from Janesville to stay undefeated Friday at Janesville.

The Spartans held off the Wildcats by a 4-3 score, thanks to a quality start.

Collins-Maxwell scored two times in the first inning and maintained a 2-0 edge until the fifth.

The Spartans added one run apiece in the fifth and six frames and needed both of them as Janesville plated three runs in the bottom of the sixth to pull within one.

Collins-Maxwell failed to score in the top of the seventh. But Spartan hurler Mikayla Houge blanked Janesville in the bottom of the inning to wrap up the victory.

Houge allowed three unearned runs on four hits with 14 strikeouts and no walks to help Collins-Maxwell improve to 8-0. She also went 2-for-4 at the plate.

Hannah Caple was 2-for-4 with an RBI, Ella Kahler finished 2-for-4, Alexis Houge singled and stole two bases, Emma Kahler walked three times and picked up two runs and steals apiece and Katie Camp singled, scored and stole two bases. Trinity Stover stole a base and scored a run and Reagan Franzen drew a walk.

MCCALLSBURG - Collins-Maxwell took care of business on the mound and at the plate against Colo-NESCO, posting an 8-0 victory over the Royals May 31 at McCallsburg.

Collins-Maxwell pounded out 16 hits on offense. Spartan pitcher Mikayla Houge limited the Royals to just one hit and she finished with 12 strikeouts and no walks.

Alexis Houge was 4-for-5 with a double, three runs, one steal and an RBI and Mikayla went 3-for-5 with a double and RBI for Collins-Maxwell on offense. Emma Kahler was 3-for-4 with a double, run and four RBIs.

Reagan Franzen added two hits and an RBI; Olivia Pasquariello singled, walked and scored twice and Brailyn Tankersly added two hits and a walk for the Spartans. Hannah Caple singled and drove in a run; Trinity Stover walked, stole a base and scored and Avery Fricke scored once.

Rylee Purvis was the losing pitcher for Colo-NESCO. Purvis went the distance and finished with two walks.

A Claire Skinner single accounted for the lone Colo-NESCO hit.

COLLINS - A big first inning sparked Collins-Maxwell to an 11-2 victory over Don Bosco May 30 at Collins.

The Spartans put up six runs in the first inning. They went up 10-2 by the end of the third inning, and went on cruise control the rest of the way.

Mikayla Houge gave up two runs on four hits with 11 strikeouts and three walks in seven innings to get the victory.

Houge also went 2-for-4 with a home run and four RBIs with the bat.

Reagan Franzen was 3-for-4 with a double and two runs; Alexis Houge 2-for-3 with three steals, two runs, one walk and one RBI and Ella Kahler finished 2-for-3 with a double, walk, two runs and a pair of RBIs. Hanah Jurgens went 1-for-3 with a walk and an RBI; Emma Kahler singled, walked, stole a base, scored and knocked in a run and Hannah Caple chipped in a single.

Kylie McMahon and Kindra Welter each hit a solo home run to account for the two Don Bosco runs. McMahon took the loss on the mound after giving up 10 runs — eight earned — on 11 hits with three strikeouts and one walk in three innings.

COLLINS - Collins-Maxwell easily overcame a slow start with a big finish in an 11-1 victory over Gilbert in six innings May 29 at Collins.

The Spartans fell behind 1-0 after two innings, but scored three times in the third to move in front for good.

Collins-Maxwell added four more runs in the fourth and two apiece in the next two innings to end the game early.

Hannah Caple was 3-for-4 with a double and her first-career home run for the Spartans. Caple scored once and drove in three runs.

Alexis Houge finished 2-for-4 with a double, steal and two runs and Ella Kahler was 1-for-3 with a walk, two runs and an RBI for the Spartans. Katie Camp singled, walked, scored once and stole three bases; Olivia Pasquariello was 1-for-2 with a walk, steal, run and RBI and Brailyn Tankersly singled once.

Mikayla Houge was the winning pitcher. She struck out nine and gave up three hits and two walks in six innings.

Jordyn Pike gave up nine runs — eight earned — on eight hits and four walks with two strikeouts in four innings to take the loss for Gilbert.

Bella Nelson led the Tigers on offense by going 2-for-3 with a triple and an RBI.
