Mustangs run past Bombers

HUXLEY - Ballard couldn’t stop a Dallas Center-Grimes team full of weapons in all phases of play during a Class 3A District 2 football game at Rich Strouse Field Friday.

DCG, ranked second in 3A, hurt Ballard both through the air and on the ground offensively. The Mustangs also dominated defensively and made big plays on special teams, handing the Bombers a 40-7 setback.

“We gave up a long pass, a long run, a fake punt to our 10-yard line and gave them the ball inside our 30 three times,” Ballard head football coach Al Christian said. “Against a really good team — that will get you whipped.”

Ballard (1-3, 1-1) hung tough early as the score was tied at 7-7 midway through the first quarter. But DCG (4-0, 2-0) scored 26 unanswered points to take a 33-7 lead at the half and the Mustang defense took care of the rest.

Damon Clapper threw an 80-yard touchdown pass to Garrett Belzer and scored on a 76-yard run for DCG in the first half. Clapper also found Tanner Epple on a 5-yard touchdown pass, Luke Fistler scored on a short run and Austin James kicked two field goals.

Epple added a 6-yard touchdown run in the third quarter to cap the scoring for DCG.

Ballard’s only touchdown came when quarterback Isaac Schafbuch ran one in from 12 yards out with six minutes, 27 seconds left in the first quarter.

Ballard finished the game with just 152 yards of offense and DCG ended up with 437. The Bombers also had three turnovers.

“We were beaten in all three parts of the game — along with getting out-coached,” Christian said. “We will regroup next week and continue to work hard to get better.”

Schafbuch ran for 50 yards and threw for 48. Gavin Hobbs and Skylar Noftsger ran for 22 and 20 yards respectively and Noftsger also caught two passes for 14 yards.

Gannon Manfull made two receptions for 16 yards and Reece Huen added a 13-yard reception for the Bombers.

On defense, Ben Lee came up with nine tackles and Josh DeTar totaled seven. Ben Hokel had six tackles and a fumble recovery, Justice Sullivan tacked on six tackles and Sam Andrews came up with 4.5 stops.

Clapper completed 10 of 20 passes for 198 yards and ran for 82 yards to lead DCG. Epple had 91 yards rushing and 30 receiving and Belzer made two catches for 93 yards.

Trent Carpenter led DCG on defense with 11 tackles and two tackles for loss.

Up next for Ballard is another difficult task. The Bombers go on the road to face Webster City (4-0, 2-0), last year’s state runner-up in 3A.

The Ballard-Webster City contest is set to begin at 7:30 p.m. next Friday in Webster City.
