Raider era ends with gutsy effort

VAN METER - The Class 2A district semifinal baseball game between Collins-Maxwell-Baxter and Van Meter saw the Raiders take their final bow with a 5-0 loss to the Bulldogs July 11 at Van Meter.

It was the final athletic event for a CMB program that was put together 28 years ago. Last fall, the Collins-Maxwell and Baxter high schools ended a sports-sharing agreement that began back in 1988.

CMB simply didn’t get enough done on offense to keep pace with a Van Meter team rated No. 8 in 2A. Raider pitchers Brady Kemp and Creighton Caple only had two walks combined and they gave up eight hits, but CMB only supported them with four hits on offense.

Kemp and Caple, both seniors, each gave a tremendous effort in their final games to help CMB go down gracefully in its last act as a program.

Kemp took the loss after allowing five runs — three earned — on seven hits and one walk with five strikeouts in five innings. Caple threw one scoreless inning and issued one hit and walk apiece.

Cole Damman singled and walked and Caple, Brady Ross and Tucker Maxwell each singled once for CMB on offense. Adam Smith and Andrew Esqueda each walked once for the Raiders, who finished their last-ever season at 5-21.

Van Meter improved to 28-4 with the victory. Anthony Lowman was the winning Bulldog pitcher after striking out six and giving up four hits and one walk in four innings.

Connor Guess doubled, walked twice and scored two times and Carson Rhodes was 2-for-3 with a double and two RBI to pace Van Meter at the plate.
