Comets’ Moon advances to state in boys’ tennis

GRUNDY CENTER - The North Polk boys’ tennis team saw its season come to a close with a 5-3 loss to Grundy Center in the Class 1A preliminary substate round Saturday at Grundy Center.

The Comets split the six singles matches with the Spartans. But Grundy Center won the first two doubles matches to reach the five victories necessary to win the meet.

Evan Moon and Jack Veber won the Nos. 1 and 2 singles matches for North Polk.

Moon swept Sage Klar by 6-4 and 7-5 scores in the No. 1 match. Veber rallied from a 6-4 loss in the opening set of the No. 2 match against Tjaden Meester to win the next two sets by scores of 6-2 and 6-3.

Ethan Knight also gave North Polk a win in the No. 6 singles match versus Landon Graham. Knight rebounded from a 6-2 loss in the opening set to claim the next two sets by 6-2 and 6-1 scores.

Garrett Weldon (GC) defeated David Brudtkuhl (NP); 6-1, 6-3. 5. Nick Voss (GC) defeated Brennan Gering (NP); 6-3, 6-3. 6. Ethan Knight (NP) defeated Landon Graham (GC); 2-6, 6-2, 6-1.

Doubles: 1. Klar and Meester (GC) defeated Lehman and Veber (GC); 6-1, 6-4. 2. Boren and Weldon (GC) defeated Moon and Gering (NP); 7-5, 6-3.

BOONE - North Polk’s Evan Moon claimed a district championship at the Class 1A district singles and doubles tournament May 11 at McHose Park in Boone.

Moon won the singles title to qualify for the state singles and doubles tournament as a freshman. The freshman went 3-0 and swept all three matches in an impressive outing.

After receiving a bye, Moon blanked Iowa Falls-Alden’s Alex England in the quarterfinals with a pair of 6-0 victories. In the semifinals, Moon took down Grundy Center’s Sage Klar by scores of 6-3 and 6-2.

Moon faced off against Iowa Falls-Alden’s Marcos Vila in the championship. The Comet freshman brought his “A” game to the match, shutting out Vila, 6-0 and 6-0, to punch his ticket to state.

Brennan Gering also competed in singles play at the district meet.

Gering lost to Steffen Chambers of Webster City in the first round. Gering won the first set by a 6-3 score, dropped the second by a 6-2 margin and and suffered a heartbreaking 7-6 loss in the third after losing the tiebreaker by a 7-4 margin.

In doubles play, Ben Lehman and Jake Veber went 1-1 and Ethan Knight and David Bergren ended up 0-1 for North Polk.

Lehman and Veber defeated Webster City’s Aaron Campbell and Luke Bergeson by 6-0 and 6-1 scores. The Comet team was eliminated by Fort Dodge St. Edmond’s Nelson Cook and Gage Johnson, with Lehman and Veber winning the first set by a 6-1 score, then losing 6-4 in each of the next two.

Ethan Knight and David Bergren also competed in the doubles tournament. The Comet duo suffered 6-2 and 6-1 losses to Webster City’s Kolton Gemmel and Brandon Peck.

The 1A state singles and doubles tournament takes place May 26-27 at the Byrnes Park Tennis Center in Waterloo. There will be a coaches meeting at 8 a.m., May 26, followed by a seedings meeting and then play will begin.
