Errors hurt Ballard in district loss to Gilbert

BOONE - A sloppy game on defense proved fatal for Ballard in its 5-2 loss to Gilbert in the Class 3A district semifinals Friday at Boone.

The Bombers were unable to overcome five errors in the season-ending loss.

Ballard managed to overcome four errors in a 6-5 win over Gilbert at Slater to close out the regular season just three days earlier. But the Tigers also had four errors in that game versus just one in the district matchup.

The district game between the non-conference rivals was pretty even through four innings. Gilbert jumped out to a 1-0 lead and both teams scored twice in the third.

After a scoreless fourth inning, Gilbert managed to put up two runs in the top of the fifth to gain some breathing room. Ballard was unable to break out of its hitting funk over the final three innings, finishing the season with a 19-12 record.

Marcus Chieves was 1-for-2 with a double, run, sacrifice hit and RBI in his final game for Ballard. Jonny Luster went 1-for-3 with an RBI, Austin Edwards singled and walked, Kobe Schulze picked up a single in his final game and Taylor Roberts also drew a walk for the Bombers at the plate.

Edwards was the losing pitcher. He gave up five runs - just two earned - on four hits with five walks in 4 ? innings.

Colin Anderson threw 2 ? scoreless innings for the Bombers. He gave up two hits and struck out three with no walks.

Gilbert improved to 18-13 with the win. Nathan Chasey gave up two unearned runs on four hits with 10 strikeouts and two walks in six innings to earn the victory for the Tigers.

Chasey was also 2-for-3 with two runs and RBI apiece on offense for Gilbert. Barrett Schonefeld also went 2-for-3 with a home run and two RBI for the Tigers.

SLATER - A clutch performance on the mound and at the plate from Jack Luster lifted Ballard to a thrilling 6-5 victory over Gilbert in eight innings to end the regular season July 12 at Nite Hawk Field in Slater.

Luster drove in Taylor Roberts with the winning run in the bottom of the eighth. He also picked up the win on the mound after throwing scoreless frames in the seventh and eighth innings.

In the bottom of the eighth, Roberts reached on a one-out walk, and after Gannon Manfull flied out to left, he stole second. With two outs, Luster strolled to the plate and hit a grounder to shortstop.

The ball looked to be a routine out, but it was misplayed and rolled into the outfield. Roberts took full advantage of the miscue to race home with the winning run.

“Thought about stealing (third), but good thing I didn’t — I might have got hosed — who knows,” Roberts said. “Jack hit it in play — I don’t know what happened, if the shortstop messed up or what — but it got me in. It worked.”

Luster figured he was out on the play.

“Once I hit it I knew that he was probably going to make a play, so I was running as hard as I could,” Luster said. “Once I heard the dugout scream and yell I turned and looked, and it went to the outfield. I just knew (Roberts) was going to score.”

On the mound, Luster came in during the top of the seventh and worked around a leadoff single by Gilbert’s Nathan Chasey and an errant pickoff throw to first. Luster fanned the Tigers’ Ryan Hart and forced Garrison Holck to pop up in foul territory for two big outs and he completed the inning by getting Skyler Popillion to ground out to first base.

Luster gave up a one-out single to Gilbert’s Cale Jensen in the top of the eighth. The Bomber pitcher came back by forcing Adam Simodynes to pop out to third and Steven Lawrence to ground out to keep Gilbert off the board.

“I knew that my teammates needed me,” Luster said. “If I could just hold them it could really lift us up and give us confidence and say that we could get this.”

Luster didn’t allow a run on two hits with one strikeout and no walks in two innings to get the victory.

Colin Anderson threw three scoreless innings with one hit and no walks allowed as the Bomber starter. Marcus Chieves gave up five unearned runs on four hits with two walks in 2 ? innings and Kobe Schulze tossed ? of a scoreless inning and gave up two hits with one strikeout.

Luster ended up 1-for-4 with two RBI and Roberts was 1-for-2 with two walks, a steal and three runs. Jonny Luster went 2-for-4 with a run; Lane Shaeffer was 2-for-4; Manfull doubled, scored and drove in a run and Chieves singled once for the Bombers.

Garrison Holck gave up one unearned run with one walk in two innings to take the loss for Gilbert. Landon Howard allowed five runs - three earned - on eight hits with two strikeouts and one walk in 5 ? innings as the Tiger starter and Ryan Hart threw ? of an inning for Gilbert.

Chasey and Jensen were both 2-for-4 and Simodynes drove in two runs for Gilbert on offense.
