Raiders down Hawks in district quarterfinals
COLLINS - The Collins-Maxwell-Baxter baseball team turned in an impressive showing in the Class 2A district quarterfinals Saturday in Collins as the Raiders blanked South Hamilton, 9-0.
Brady Stover and Hunter McWhirter combined to throw a three-hitter and the Raider offense produced 8 hits. The win evened CMB’s season record at 11-11.
Stover was masterful for five innings to get the victory. He struck out 11 and allowed only two hits and one walk.
McWhirter was just as strong in his two innings of relief work. McWhirter fanned four batters and he only surrendered one hit, with no walks allowed.
At the plate, CMB took a 4-0 lead after two innings. The Raiders the slammed the door on the Hawks in the fourth inning with a five-run outburst.
Brady Kemp was 2-for-4 with a double, two runs and RBI and Spencer Gauch went 2-for-3 with a steal, run and RBI for CMB on offense. Brady Ross went 1-for-3 with a walk, run and RBI; Creighton Caple finished 1-for-2 with one run and RBI apiece; Brad Ritter was 1-for-3 with a walk, steal and run and Stover ended up 1-for-5 with a run.
Nate Bishop walked, scored and drove in a run and Aric Broderick walked and scored for CMB.

COLLINS - A good showing by a deep pitching rotation gave Collins-Maxwell-Baxter a 3-2 victory over Madrid to close out the regular season July 6 at Collins.
The Raiders threw four pitchers at the Tigers and they combined to give up just three hits. That enabled CMB to prevail, despite only collecting three hits itself on offense.
Hunter McWhirter struck out one and gave up one hit in two scoreless innings to get the victory for CMB. Brady Stover struck out four in two hitless and scoreless innings, Brady Kemp allowed no runs on one hit with one strikeout in one inning and Brad Ritter got the save after giving up two runs on one hit with a pair of walks and one strikeout in two innings.
Stover doubled, walked, stole a base and drove in a run and Tucker Maxwell was 1-for-3 with two runs and an RBI for CMB on offense. Brady Ross knocked in a run, Brady Kemp singled, Aric Broderick walked and scored, Nate Bishop walked twice and Travis Lindemoen stole two bases for CMB.
Wyatt Smith gave up one run on three hits with one strikeout and one walk in two innings to take the loss for Madrid. Josh Henriksen singled and drove in a run and Parker Niemier singled and scored for the Tigers at the plate.

COLLINS - Collins-Maxwell-Baxter couldn’t keep up strong pitching long enough to hold off Roland-Story July 5 in Collins as the Raiders finished Heart of Iowa Conference play with a 7-1 loss to the Norsemen.
CMB and Roland-Story were engaged in a scoreless tie for four innings. But in the top of the fifth, the Norsemen put up three runs and they followed with four more scores two innings later.
All CMB could muster on offense was a run in the bottom of the seventh inning. The Raiders ended up 7-8 in the HOIC.
Brady Stover, Hunter McWhirter, Creighton Caple, Brady Kemp and Nate Bishop all saw time on the mound for CMB in the loss.
Stover threw two scoreless innings giving up two walks and no hits with three strikeouts. McWhirter also tossed a pair of scoreless innings, only allowing one hit with three strikeouts and no walks.
Creighton Caple surrendered four runs - two earned - on three hits with one strikeout and two walks in 1 ? innings. Brady Kemp gave up two walks and one hit in ? of an inning and Nate Bishop took the loss after allowing three runs - one earned - on one hit with three walks and one strikeout in ? of an inning.
Stover, McWhirter and Brad Ritter each singled once for CMB’s only hits. Creighton Caple walked twice and scored the lone Raider run.
Jake Ford threw four scoreless innings - giving up five walks and just one hit with five strikeouts - to get the win for Roland-Story. Nathan Bell was 2-for-3 with a double and a run for the Norsemen on offense.
