Comets take No. 7 Wildcats to extra innings
ALLEMAN - The North Polk baseball team pushed No. 7 Carlisle to extra innings before succumbing by an 8-4 score in nine innings Monday at Alleman.
The Comets were in control through six innings of play.
After four scoreless innings by both teams, Carlisle put two runs on the board in the top of the fifth. But North Polk answered with a four-run outburst in the bottom of the fifth.
Colby Cupp hit an RBI single, Matt Cox drew a bases-loaded walk and courtesy runners Adam Moxley and Anthony Capaldo each scored on an error for North Polk in the bottom of the fifth.
The Comets held their edge until the top of the seventh. Carlisle plated two runs in its half of the seventh to tie the game as Matt Rhodes hit a two-run double.
North Polk was unable to answer in the bottom of the inning and neither team got on the board in the eighth.
The top of the ninth saw Carlisle put up four runs. Max Goodhue hit a two-run triple, Joe Crowley scored on an error and Anthony Hanson singled in a run for the Wildcats.
Garrett Houge drew a leadoff walk for North Polk in the bottom of the ninth. But courtesy runner Ryan Spalding was left stranded as Carlisle pitcher Peyton Stephens picked up a strikeout and the Wildcats manufactured a double play to end the game.
Stephens got the win in relief. He allowed no runs or hits and struck out four with two walks in three innings of work. Rhodes drove in three runs, Stephens scored three times and Goodhue finished with two RBI for Carlisle on offense.
Houge was the losing pitcher. He gave up four runs - just one earned - on two hits with a pair of strikeouts and walks apiece in two innings.
Colten Parkins got the start for North Polk. Parkins allowed no runs or hits and struck out three with one walk in three innings.
Cupp surrendered four runs on four hits with five strikeouts and six walks in four innings for North Polk.
Cupp was 3-for-5 with an RBI and Cox went 2-for-4 with a walk and RBI to pace North Polk at the plate. Max Karpinske doubled and scored, Parkins singled and scored, Brett Haun tallied one hit, Houge drew two walks and Matthew Antle was issued one free pass.
The loss put North Polk at 15-13 on the season.

ALLEMAN - Strong pitching and a hot first inning at the plate resulted in a 5-2 victory for the North Polk baseball team over Dallas Center-Grimes Friday at Alleman.
Jake Johnson tossed a three-hitter and he was backed by error-free defense in the field. The Comet offense put up four runs in the first inning to give Johnson all the cushion he needed.
In the bottom of the first inning, Colby Cupp reached on an error and was singled in by Luke Leopold to give North Polk a 1-0 lead. Then Matt Cox singled and scored off a ball hit by Matthew Antle, Max Karpinske singled in Leopold and Brett Haun scored on an error.
DCG plated both of its runs in the top of the third. North Polk came back with a run in the bottom of the inning when Leopold doubled and scored after a single by Antle.
Johnson took care of the rest. He finished the game with three strikeouts and walks apiece to help North Polk win its fourth in a row and improve to 15-12 on the season.
Leopold was 2-for-3 with two runs and an RBI to pace the Comet bats. Cox and Haun were both 1-for-3 with a run, Antle was 1-for-3 with two RBI and Karpinske ended up 1-for-3 with an RBI.
Cupp scored a run and Colten Parkins walked once for North Polk.
Jordan Humphreys gave up five runs - three earned - on six hits with one strikeout and no walks in 5 ? innings to take the loss for DCG. Humphreys also went 2-for-3 with a double, run and RBI for the Mustangs on offense.

ALLEMAN - North Polk completed Heart of Iowa Conference play by handing South Hamilton an 8-0 drubbing at Alleman July 7.
The Comets had 11 hits and only one error. They limited South Hamilton to six hits and took advantage of two Hawk errors to end up 10-6 in the HOIC.
North Polk plated two runs in the second inning. The Comets took complete control in the fourth with a five-run outburst and they tacked on an insurance run in the fifth.
Colby Cupp tossed a complete-game shutout with an impressive 11 strikeouts against no walks to get the victory. He also went 3-for-4 at the plate with an RBI.
Matt Cox was 2-for-4 with a run and an RBI and Max Karpinske ended up 1-for-3 with one run and RBI apiece for North Polk on offense. Matthew Antle was 1-for-2 with a walk and two RBI, Luke Leopold was 1-for-3 with a walk and a run and Brett Haun finished 1-for-3 with a run.
Garrett Houge wound up 1-for-3 with one run and RBI apiece and Nate Johnson finished 1-for-3 with an RBI.
Zeke Balderas gave up two runs on five hits with two strikeouts and one walk in 2 ? innings to take the loss for South Hamilton.
