Raiders drop two close non-conference outings

GRANGER — The Collins-Maxwell-Baxter baseball team struggled with consistency at the plate in a 4-2 non-conference loss to Woodward-Granger Friday at Granger.

The Raiders tallied six hits, but could only put up two runs in one inning of play, falling to 9-10 on the season.

Woodward-Granger posted three runs in the first inning and never gave up the advantage. CMB closed within 3-2 in the top of the fourth, but the Raiders failed to score again.

Brad Ritter threw a solid game in defeat for CMB. Ritter allowed four earned runs on eight hits with five strikeouts and no walks in five innings.

Brady Kemp threw two scoreless innings, giving up just one hit and no walks with one strikeout.

At the plate Ritter, Brady Stover and Aric Broderick each collected two singles for CMB. Broderick added one run and RBI apiece and Stover drove in one run.

Spencer Gauch walked, stole a base and scored for the Raiders. Ritter also had two steals and a walk.

Reese Jamison gave up two earned runs, five hits and two walks with six strikeouts in five innings to get the victory for Woodward-Granger. Brady Aunspach went 3-for-3 with two runs for the Hawks on offense.

COLFAX — A great comeback came up painfully short for Collins-Maxwell-Baxter in a 9-8 non-conference setback versus Colfax-Mingo June 28 at Colfax.

The Raiders looked on the verge of being blown out after falling behind 7-0 after two innings. But they scored three unanswered runs in the third and two more in both the fourth and fifth innings to tie the score.

CMB then went in front for the first time with a run in the top of the sixth to cap an 8-0 spurt. But Colfax-Mingo ended its drought with a run in the bottom of the inning.

The Raiders were unable to keep up their momentum in the top of the seventh. The Tigerhawks took advantage with a run in the bottom of the inning to win the game.

Brad Ritter went 3-for-4 with a walk, steal and run, Brady Kemp was 2-for-4 with a run and two RBI and Brady Stover finished 2-for-4 with an RBI for CMB at the plate. Creighton Caple singled and drove in two runs, Spencer Gauch was 1-for-4 with two runs, Brady Ross finished 1-for-3 with a walk, run and RBI, and Aric Broderick doubled, walked and scored.

Hunter McWhirter chipped in a single, run and RBI and Nate Bishop was 1-for-4 with a run.

McWhirter gave up two runs - just one earned - on five hits with nine strikeouts and two walks in 5 ? innings to take the loss despite a strong effort on the mound. Nate Bishop allowed seven runs - five earned - on five hits with four walks in one inning of work.

Gabe Simpson was 3-for-4 with two runs, two steals and an RBI for Colfax-Mingo. Jarod Nichols allowed five runs - three earned - with four strikeouts and one walk in 3 ? innings to get the win in relief for the Tigerhawks.
