Comets top Gilbert, SH to end HOIC play

ANKENY — The North Polk softball team ended the regular season with a tough 12-0 loss to Class 5A power Ankeny in four innings Friday at Ankeny.

The Comes were no-hit by Hawk pitcher Allison Doocy. Ankeny gave Doocy all the support she needed in the first inning with three runs and the Hawks also had big innings in the third and fourth frames.

Bailey Hougham was the losing North Polk pitcher. Hougham gave up five earned runs on eight hits with one walk in three innings.

Sophie Swygman allowed four earned runs on five hits with one strikeout in ? of an inning for the Comets, who completed the regular season at 19-12. Ellie Owen drew a walk for North Polk on offense.

Ankeny improved to 26-10. Doocy had seven strikeouts and one walk to get the victory and she also tripled and drove in three runs at the plate.

ALLEMAN — North Polk closed out Heart of Iowa Conference competition with a 4-3 victory over Gilbert June 30 at Alleman.

The Comets rallied from a 3-0 deficit to knock off the Tigers and finish 10-5 in the HOIC.

North Polk trailed by three runs going into the bottom of the fifth. The Comets put up one run in the fifth then added two unanswered runs in the sixth to tie the score.

After keeping Gilbert off the board in the top of the seventh, North Polk came through with the winning run in the bottom of the inning.

Becca Ley was 2-for-2 with a double, three steals, two runs and an RBI for North Polk in the win. Paige Sandberg went 2-for-3 with one walk, steal, run and RBI apiece.

Carolyn Steffen was 1-for-4 with a run, Rebecca Rimathe went 1-for-4 with an RBI, Ellie Owen walked and singled and Bailey Hougham added a single for the Comets. Sophie Swygman was the winning pitcher as she allowed one earned run on six hits with two walks in seven innings.

ALLEMAN — The bats came alive late for North Polk in a 10-0 Heart of Iowa Conference victory over South Hamilton in six innings June 29 at Alleman.

North Polk pounded out 17 hits against Hawk pitcher Taylor Volkmann. The Comets scored once in the third, two runs apiece in the fourth and fifth frames then broke the game open with a five-run sixth.

Audrey Ley was 4-for-4 with two doubles and two runs, Rebecca Rimathe finished 3-for-4 with a double, run and RBI and Paige Sandberg went 3-for-4 with a steal and a run for the Comets. Courtney Wilson finished 2-for-4 with a run; Carolyn Steffen was 1-for-3 with a double, two runs and two RBI and Trisha Sporra ended up with a single and two RBI.

Ellie Owen went 1-for-3 with a run, steal and RBI and Maddy Hill doubled, scored and drove in a run for the Comets. Alexis Davis added a single and RBI, Emily Patterson scored once and Jenna Fagen stole a base for North Polk.

Sophie Swygman tossed a three-hitter with two strikeouts and walks apiece over six innings to get the victory for North Polk. Taylor Volkmann allowed eight earned runs with six strikeouts and one walk in 5 ? innings to take the loss for South Hamilton.

Alyssa Hegland, Chloe Barkema and Lily Skartvedt each singled once for the only South Hamilton hits.
