Comets sweep No. 5 Norse in doubleheader

STORY CITY — The North Polk baseball team went above .500 with a doubleheader sweep of Roland-Story Friday at Story City.

The Comets pulled off 1-0 and 7-2 victories over the No. 5 team in Class 2A to go to 13-12 overall and 9-6 in the Heart of Iowa Conference.

“It was a tough week with two one-run losses and a roller-coaster game with Ballard,” North Polk head coach Dave Middleton said. “I’m glad to see the kids were able to pull things together.”

A great pitching performance by Colten Parkins led North Polk to victory in the opener. Parkins tossed a two-hitter and only needed a run in the top of the sixth inning to earn the win.

Parkins recorded six strikeouts and just one walk in a masterful performance. He retired the side in order during each of the final two innings after the Comet run to wrap up the victory.

In the top of the sixth inning, Luke Leopold drew a bases-loaded walk to drive in the only run of the game. Garrett Houge walked, Matt Cox singled and Colby Cupp was hit by a pitch to load the bases with two outs to set up Leopold’s winning RBI in the top of the sixth.

North Polk’s only other hit was a single by Colby Cupp in the second inning. Colby Gray and Zach Shadlow each singled for the lone Roland-Story hits, and Landon Greiner drew a walk for the Norse.

Tyler Hovick was the losing Roland-Story pitcher in the opener. Hovick struck out seven and walked four in six innings to take the loss for the Norsemen.

In the nightcap, North Polk prevailed by a 7-2 margin. The Comets fell behind 2-1 after three innings, but then put six unanswered runs on the board with three in the fourth, two in the fifth and another in the seventh to pull away.

Cox was 1-for-3 with a run, walk, two steals and two RBI for North Polk in the win. Matthew Antle ended up 3-for-3 with a walk and an RBI, Nate Johnson was 3-for-3 with a run and a walk, Brett Haun finished 3-for-5, Houge was 1-for-2 with three RBI and Cupp was 1-for-2 with a walk.

Cupp gave up two runs, one earned, on two hits with four strikeouts and walks apiece in 4 ? innings to earn the win for North Polk in the second game. Jake Johnson threw 2 ? scoreless innings with two hits and no walks to get the save for the Comets.

Jake Ford allowed six runs - five earned - on 10 hits with four walks and one strikeout in 4 ? innings to earn the loss for Roland-Story. Hovick, Caleb Schlatter, Nathan Hill and John Barclay each singled once for Roland-Story.

GILBERT — North Polk wasn’t able to complete a rally against Gilbert in a 4-3 loss to the Tigers June 29 at Gilbert.

The Comets fell behind 3-0, then rallied to tie the game in the top of the fifth inning. Ben Rupe hit a two-run double to follow up an RBI single for Matt Cox in the Comet half of the fifth.

But Gilbert came back with the eventual winning run an inning later. Steven Lawrence singled and eventually made his way home on a North Polk error for the winning Tiger run.

Nathan Chasey gave up three runs on seven hits with two walks and one strikeout in six innings to get the win for Gilbert. Garrett Houge gave up four runs - two earned - on six hits with three strikeouts and two walks to take the loss for North Polk.

Houge was hurt by four Comet errors on defense. North Polk tallied seven hits offensively.

Rupe was 1-for-4 with two RBI, Cox was 1-for-4 with one run and RBI apiece and Brett Haun was 1-for-3 with a run and a walk for North Polk. Nate Johnson was 2-for-3, Max Karpinske was 1-for-3 and Houge wound up 1-for-2 for North Polk.

Lawrence was 2-for-4 with two runs and Chasey was 1-for-4 with two RBI to pace Gilbert on offense.

JEFFERSON — For 6 ½ innings, North Polk got what it wanted against Greene County June 27 at Jefferson, but the Comets sputtered late, dropping a 5-4 heart breaker in eight innings.

North Polk led 4-1 going into the bottom of the seventh. The Comets plated two runs in both the first and fifth innings and only allowed a run in the bottom of the fifth going into the bottom half of the seventh.

But Greene County scored three runs in the bottom of the seventh to tie the game and force extra innings. The Rams scored all three runs in the seventh with two outs.

After North Polk failed to score in the top of the eighth, the Rams put the winning run on the board in the bottom of the inning when Brandon Miller drew a bases-loaded walk.

North Polk fell despite outhitting Greene County, 10-5. The Comets had four errors to the Rams’ two.

Luke Leopold was 2-for-4 with a run and two RBI and Max Karpinske went 2-for-4 with an RBI and a steal for North Polk on offense. Matt Cox was 2-for-3 with a run and a steal, Brett Haun was 2-for-5 with a run and Colby Cupp was 1-for-3 with an RBI for the Comets.

Dawson Deitch added one single for North Polk. Haun gave up one run on four walks and one hit in an inning of relief to take the loss for the Comets.

Colten Parkins surrendered no runs on just one hit with four strikeouts and walks apiece in four innings for North Polk. Cupp allowed three earned runs on three hits with four strikeouts and three walks in 2 ? innings for the Comets.

Wade Adcock threw a scoreless and hitless eighth inning to earn the win for Greene County. Austin Delp had two strikeouts and no walks in seven innings for the Rams.

Adcock was 2-for-4 with a double and a run and Miller and Ben Wilkens each knocked in two runs for Greene County.
