Bombers hold off Perry, 10-7

PERRY — The Ballard baseball team withstood a difficult sixth inning to outlast Perry, 10-7, June 30 at Perry.

The Bombers saw a 6-1 lead evaporate in the bottom of the sixth when Perry exploded for six runs. But the Bombers came back with four unanswered runs over the next two innings to complete a season sweep of the Bluejays and improve to 16-9 overall and 7-5 in the Raccoon River Conference.

Austin Edwards was 2-for-3 with a double, run, walk and two RBI; Lane Shaeffer went 1-for-2 with two walks, a run and two RBI and Gannon Manfull wound up 2-of-4 with a double and two RBI to pace Ballard’s 12-hit attack on offense. Brooks Fleischmann went 2-for-4 with a run; Isaac Schafbuch was 1-for-3 with a run, walk and two RBI and Taylor Roberts ended up 2-for-4 with a run for the Bombers.

Kobe Schulze singled and scored, Clayton Poots singled and Nick Fopma and Hunter Wright each scored twice for the Bombers.

Shaeffer picked up the win in relief. He gave up no runs on one hit with two walks and one strikeout in 1 ? innings.

Colin Anderson earned the save for Ballard. He threw a scoreless seventh inning and gave up one hit with one strikeout and no walks.

Edwards gave up four runs - three earned - on one hit with five walks and three strikeouts in four innings as the Bomber starter. Kai Reinertson allowed three runs on two hits with one strikeout and walk apiece in ? of an inning.

Alexis Garrido gave up five earned runs on 10 hits with one walk in five innings to take the loss for Perry. Alex Long was 1-for-2 with , two walks, a run and an RBI and Kaleb Olejniczak went 2-for-2 with two walks, two runs and an RBI for the Bluejays on offense.

WINTERSET — Ballard’s early momentum quickly evaporated in a 9-4 loss at Winterset June 29.

The Bombers raced out to a 3-0 lead through the top half of the first inning. But Winterset came back with four runs in the bottom of the inning and never relinquished the lead.

The Huskies added two more runs in both the third and fourth innings and another in the fifth. Ballard’s only other run came in the top of the sixth.

Both teams finished with eight hits. Ballard had four errors to Winterset’s two and the Bombers also issued three more walks than the Huskies.

Kobe Schulze was 2-for-4 with a run, Austin Edwards went 2-for-4 and Marcus Chieves finished 1-for-4 with a run and RBI apiece for the Bombers. Kai Reinertson doubled and drove in a run, Brooks Fleischmann singled and walked and Clayton Poots added a single for the Bombers.

Taylor Roberts delivered one run and RBI apiece, Lane Shaeffer walked and drove in a run and Tanner Brock walked and scored for the Bombers.

Jack Luster allowed six runs - three earned - on six hits with four strikeouts and three walks in 2 ? innings to take the loss for Ballard. Schulze gave up three runs - one earned - on two hits with three walks in 3 ? innings.

Conner Van Pelt went the distance on the mound, giving up three earned runs with five strikeouts and three walks to get the win for Winterset. Colby Van Pelt was 2-for-3 with a double, run and two RBI for the Huskies on on offense.

DES MOINES — A late collapse doomed Ballard in a 10-7 loss to Pella Christian at Principal Park in Des Moines June 27.

The Bombers were in complete control through six innings. But they gave up seven runs in the top of the seventh and couldn’t answer in the bottom of the inning.

Fielding miscues burned Ballard. The Bombers committed five errors and the Eagles didn’t have any miscues in the field.

Austin Edwards went 2-for-3 with a double, run and two RBI and Lane Shaeffer doubled and drove in two runs for Ballard in the loss. Kobe Schulze was 2-for-2 with a walk and two runs; Jonny Luster went 1-for-3 with one walk, run and RBI apiece plus two steals; Clayton Poots tripled and Taylor Roberts and Brooks Fleischmann each added a single.

Roberts took the loss on the mound. He gave up three runs - just one earned - on two hits with no walks in one inning.

Kai Reinertson allowed seven runs - five earned - on five hits with four strikeouts and five walks in six innings as the Bomber starter.

Clay Stravers allowed no runs or hits with two strikeouts and one walk in two innings of relief to get the victory for Pella Christian. Scott Haveman doubled and drove in two runs and Ben Bouwkamp was 1-for-2 with a walk, two runs and an RBI for the Eagles.
