ANKENY - The North Polk baseball team came up short in two games at the Prange Classic played at Ankeny High School and Saydel Friday.

The Comets went up against two Class 4A schools - falling to Johnston by a 6-3 score and Ames by a 5-0 margin to go to 11-9 overall on the season.

In the loss to Johnston - the No. 1 team in Class 4A - the Comets jumped out to a 1-0 lead after one inning, but Johnston countered with four runs in the bottom of the second. North Polk pulled within 4-3 after 3 ½ frames, but Johnston blanked the Comets over the final three innings and added an insurance run in both the fourth and fifth innings to secure the win.

“We played No. 1 Johnston pretty tough,” North Polk head baseball coach Dave Middleton said. “Matt Antle kept them guessing and delivered a nice two-run single to keep us within striking distance. (Matt) Cox was effective in relief.

Antle gave up five earned runs on five hits with four walks and one strikeout in 3 ? innings to take the loss for North Polk. Cox allowed one unearned run on two hits with two walks in 2 ? innings for the Comets.

On offense, Antle doubled and drove in two runs. Brett Haun and Ben Rupe were both 1-for-3 with a run and Colby Cupp walked and scored for North Polk.

Derek Hackman went 2-for-4 with a home run and two RBI for Johnston. Nolan Monthei was 2-for-3 with a walk, run and RBI for the Dragons.

Andrew Zimmermann gave up three runs on three hits with one strikeout and walk apiece in four innings to get the win for Johnston.

In the loss to Ames, the Comets only totaled four hits and they were hurt by two errors. Ames scored a run in the third, then plated three in the fourth and another in the fifth to take charge behind pitcher Tynan Shahidi.

Shahidi didn’t walk a batter in seven innings to earn the shutout victory. Ben Rupe hit a double, and Luke Leopold, Colby Cupp and Antle each singled once for North Polk.

Jake Johnson gave up five runs - four earned - on five hits with two strikeouts and walks apiece in five innings to take the loss for North Polk. Garrett Houge tossed two scoreless innings and allowed just two hits with no walks for the Comets.

Jack Rodgers was 1-for-3 with one run and RBI apiece, Ben Cassady finished 2-for-3 with a run and Drew Schmit went 2-for-3 with a double and an RBI for Ames on offense.

ALLEMAN - North Polk struggled to find consistency against a Saydel team rated No. 5 in Class 3A as the Comets suffered a 10-4 loss to the Eagles in Heart of Iowa Conference play June 22 at Alleman.

North Polk fell behind 6-1 after three innings. Saydel plated three runs apiece in the second and third frames and North Polk scored a run in the bottom of the third.
