Comet softball team goes 2-1 at Boone

BOONE - The North Polk softball team went 2-1 at the Boone Invitational Saturday in Boone as the Comets knocked off Des Moines Christian and Fort Dodge St. Edmond, and came up short versus Chariton.

North Polk pulled off a 7-6 victory over Des Moines Christian in six innings. The Comets rallied from a 4-0 deficit to take a 5-4 lead, Des Moines Christian went back in front in the fifth inning, then North Polk scored twice in the sixth to reclaim the lead and claim the victory.

Bailey Hougham was the victorious pitcher for North Polk against Des Moines Christian. Hougham gave up six runs - just one earned - on six hits with three walks in six innings of work.

The Comets compiled five hits off Des Moines Christian pitchers Olivia Penland and Beth Zimmer. Ellie Owen led the way by going 2-for-4 with a run and three RBI for the Comets.

Maddy Hill was 1-for-2 with a walk and a run and Paige Sandberg finished 1-for-3 with a run for North Polk. Alexis Davis singled and scored; Courtney Wilson walked, scored and drove in a run and Trisha Sporra, Rebecca Rimathe and Carolyn Steffen each walked and tallied one RBI apiece.

Sophie Swygman also walked and scored and Jenna Fagen crossed the plate once for North Polk.

Zimmer allowed two earned runs with two strikeouts in two innings to take the loss for Des Moines Christian. Olivia Penland gave up five earned runs with six walks in 3 ? innings.

Penland doubled and drove in a run; Emma Veenstra doubled, scored and knocked in three runs and Brooke Mumford was 2-for-3 with a double, two runs and an RBI for Des Moines Christian.

North Polk rallied for a 4-3 victory over Fort Dodge St. Edmond in six innings. The Comets trailed 3-2 going into the bottom of the fifth, but scored a run in the fifth and another in the sixth to edge the Gaels.

Steffen walked three times, stole two bases and scored twice for North Polk versus the Gaels. Freshman Rio Monk was 2-for-3 with a triple and a run, Hougham singled and drove in a run, Alexis Davis scored one run, Sandberg walked and drove in a run and Owen was 1-for-3 with an RBI.

Sporra added a walk and a steal and Rimathe stole one base for North Polk versus the Gaels. Hougham got the victory on the mound after allowing three runs - one earned - on five hits with five strikeouts and two walks in six innings.

Rylee Kinney gave up four runs - three earned - with six walks and two strikeouts in 5 ? innings to take the loss for St. Edmond. Megan Flattery was 3-for-3 with a run and RBI for the Gaels on offense.

North Polk suffered a 9-8 loss to Chariton in five innings at Boone. The Comets weren’t quite able to rally after giving up eight runs in the fourth inning as they plated three runs in the top of the fifth to finish one run shy of forcing the Chargers to bat in the bottom half of the inning.

Hill was 1-for-2 with a walk, double, two runs and two RBI for North Polk versus Chariton. Sandberg went 2-for-3 with a run, steal and RBI; Monk was 2-for-3 with two runs and a steal and Wilson ended up 2-for-3 with two RBI.

Owen singled, scored and drove in a run and Rimathe and Steffen both walked and scored for North Polk.

Olivia Patterson took the loss. She allowed eight runs - seven earned - on four hits with six walks and one strikeout in 3 ? innings. Hougham gave up one unearned run on one hit with one strikeout and walk apiece in ? of an inning for the Comets.

Aubrie Richards doubled twice and drove in four runs and Saydee Terrell hit a pair of doubles, walked once, scored three times and drove in a run for the Chargers.

Carley Arnold was the winning Chariton pitcher. She gave up six earned runs with four walks in five innings.

North Polk concluded the tournament with a 17-10 overall record.

DES MOINES - North Polk held off a Saydel comeback attempt over the final 3 ½ innings to knock off the Eagles, 8-6, in a Heart of Iowa Conference outing at Des Moines.

The Comets raced out to a 6-1 lead after scoring a run in the first and five in the second. Saydel plated one run apiece in the bottom of the second and third innings, but North Polk came back with two runs in the top of the fourth to build an 8-2 cushion.

Saydel retaliated with two runs in the bottom of the fourth. The Eagles blanked the Comets over the final three innings to give themselves a chance, but they only scored two runs over that stretch as North Polk improved to 8-4 in the HOIC.

Trisha Sporra was 2-for-4 with a double, three runs, two RBI and two steals for North Polk against Saydel. Carolyn Steffen finished 3-for-4 with two RBI and Maddy Hill was 3-for-4 with one RBI.

Ellie Owen went 1-for-3 with a double, two runs and an RBI and Rebecca Rimathe belted a solo home run for North Polk. Alexis Davis finished 1-for-4 with a run, Bailey Hougham added one single and Emily Patterson stole a base and scored a run.

Hougham was the victorious pitcher. She gave up five earned runs on six hits with four walks and three strikeouts in five innings. Sophie Swygman gave up one earned run on one hit with two strikeouts and one walk in two innings of work to pick up the save for the Comets.
